bottle stoppers

Hi all,

Was planning to turn some bottle stoppers and i was just wondering about the corks. I see that you can get tappered corks from winemaking/homebrew type shops. I take it that those are what i need before drilling a hole for a dowel.

Many thanks,

Aidan.

Yes, or you can buy the pre-drilled corks or the more high-tech metal and rubber O-ring type from the woodturning suppliers like Penn State and Packard Woodworks.

"As strange as It may seems. I had people coming back to me and saying that the bottle of wine they got from me turned bad or to vinegar. Igladly exchange the bottle...Now when I gave bottles of wine away..."

Let me get this right. You GIVE bottles of wine away, and the exchange them for new ones when the eejit you gave them to, let them go bad?

Who's nuts??

PS: I always figured stoppers for wine were redundent as you should never let wine survive one sitting!

Hi Denis, Depending on the wine, you got a good deal. However it was a deal not a gift. ;) Regards, Arch

I make my stoppers from pre-bored corks placed over a dowel. They look more authentic than the stainless jobs with o-rings or the plastic type. As far as spoilage is concerned, these stoppers are for temporary storage of partially emptied bottles and stored upright, not on their sides so there is no direct contact with the wine. Their purpose is to prevent dirt, dust, bugs and excessive air from entering. The remaining wine should be consumed within a couple days or the wine will oxidize and taste like a dead mouse got in it. I have used the same one for over 10 years with no problem. Once uncorked, the bottle is emptied in a couple days. Joe Keeler
