Chuck question

After reading several post about scroll chucks here is my question. How come all the jaws are numbered??? I have a Vicmarc and originally I thought it was a balance thing. I then bought two other jaw sets and they are numbered. Since they came seperate they were not made for that perticular chuck. The screw holes all look the same. I have not tryed to see if they fit. The only thing I can think of is orientation. If you put the four jaws on a table they make a circle and if you slide them together the circle should close up. Maybe in a jaw set each jaw has to be in the correct position to make the circle close. I don't know maybe I answered my own question.

It's because of the way the "scroll" works. The jaws have to be inserted in sequence to line up properly

Jack your answer may have inadvertantly confused the OP.

The slides that are part of the chuck body have to go into the scroll in a certain order so that the scroll pulls them in or pushes them out concentrically.

The accessory jaws that screw mount onto the slides are also numbered because they're machined as an assembled unit to ensure their circular accuracy.

With Vicmarc's, the accessory jaws only need to be kept in numerical order with respect to the jaw set and don't need to be mounted to the matching number slide.

The Oneway chuck jaws have a pin in one or two that ride in a slot to prevent you from travelling out too far and thus disengaging the the jaws. Once disengaged, you have to follow the incorrectly outlined procedure in the manual to reinsert them. The procedure in the Oneway scroll chuck manual has you installing the jaws in the incorrect order. It took me a few tries before I figured this out. What a PIA!

I wonder if clockwise order still rules for the Vicmarc since they changed the scroll to tighten by turning the key clockwise & the backing jaws are ordered counter-clockwise. I've been using ccw for the accessory jaws as well since I got the chuck early this year.

The slots are not the same length either and there's a reason. Could be that the people who find a gap between their consecutive jaw sizes have the pin in the wrong slot.

Nope. The short slot is there to use if you want to prevent the jaw slides from protruding from the chuck body (safety issue for schools, etc.). The long slot gives you the max extension. Also, with the Stronghold or Talon, the jaw sets can go on in any order...as long as the "pinned" jaw is in one of the slots.

My chuck is of the newer (c.2001) CW=tighten configuration. I would think the proper way for your set would be CW, but if it works for you then why not continue. Here's most of a posting I made to the group earlier this year (4/27/03) on Vicmarc's changeover and conversion of older chucks:

To tell the truth it doesn't seem to matter. I just flipped the 1 & 3 jaws to make them run CW & there wasn't any difference. The backing jaws are really the ones that must be placed correctly.

When jaws are machined to a chuck, they are not numbered at all. When the machining is completed, the jaws are then numbered to corresponde to the already assigned chuck numbers so that when reinstalling the jaws, they are put into place where they were machined to perfect concentricity. To replace the jaws randomly would cause a definate out of round condition.

Thanks for the replys. It is one of those thinks that you normally don't think of useing them all the time.
