A short while ago someone asked for information on removing the main spring from this lathe. I have just finished and included a section on my website describing some problems and maintenance issues related to the Craftsman 15" variable speed lathe. It includes complete tear down photos and a section on how to replace the main drive belt for a lot less than Sears wants for the belt.
As stated on the page, these techniques work for me and the lathe has never run better. Your mileage may vary, of course.
