DML36SH MkII

I'm thinking about getting a Record DML36SH as a first lathe. I noticed from

formatting link
that they sell MkII (4 speed) of this lathe. I couldn't find any other information on this (not even from the Record web site). Does anyone know what are the speeds and are there any other differences from the MkI.

I will probably do about equal amounts of spindle and bowl turning. I thought that this lathe would be a good starter lathe for that kind of usage. The only thing I'm a bit worried is the low power motor on this lathe (1/3 hp). Will it provide enough of torque when roughing a large blank? Or would I need to make extremely light cuts?

I'm also thinking about getting the RP4000 chuck set.

Hello Jura

I have several of the Record small lathes; DML, RPML and CL1. I bought these years ago, before the present crop of mini and midi lathes came onto the market.

I like these Record lathes very much - they suit the between centres and faceplate work that I do because;

- they are very smooth running - no vibration at all.

- they are quiet - no rattling.

- they are well made - castings are robust ( not likely to break) and are well machined.

- they are precise. As a result of being well machined I can do more precise drilling than I can on a "big iron" costing 4 times as much.

The one third HP motors have enough power to do the work. I have never stalled one and DML's won't take a BIG bowl blank anyway. I 'm not sure what max.size is. Speeds are about 540, 1140, 1540 and 2240; on my machines.

Record has been recently corporately reorganized and have had a lapse in production. If/when they get their act together machines and parts should be easily available again. I live in Canada and wish I had easier access to Record accessories and upgrade parts; which I currently order from dealers in England.

Thanks for your input, Edward. Them being quiet is especially important as I live in a block of flats. I have pretty much set my mind on the DML36SH. The only problem is that the prices here in Finland are quite high. Lathes and chucks cost roughly 50% more than in the UK. If I can just find a cheap way to get the stuff here I will order from the UK.
