Drum Sander

Hello All, I am thinking about making a sliding table that could be mounted the bed of my Jet 1442 and then making some type of attachment mounted between centers on my lathe that would be used for the sanding drum. The table will also require some type of height adjustment as well.

My concern might be stress on the centers bearings. I could even make the sanding drum have its own mortise tapers on the motor end and use a live center for the tail.

Has anyone attempted this?

Comments please.

Hi Jimbo

Jim I would build a sander/table/box rather than use my lathe for that, wood dust and sandpaper grit are not very good for your lathe to start of and You can do the sanding on a lot less costly setup than your lathe. Got a link here for you, they carry kits for building the sander, from basic to the works, and have plans on how to build a floor model, it's very simple to build a basic sander setup imo.

I have a dust collector that I will be hooking up to it. I was hoping to avoid buying a motor for it. Stockroom does have some interesting parts for sanders that is for sure.

I like the setup from the link Jim Staley posted. I will probably make some modifications to that setup. I'll post links to pictures as I move along on this.

Thanks for the input!

I built one of those. Got the parts from Nicks. As far as know it's the

same stuff -- slightly different kits.

You can see a finished sander here. The link to the supplier is there.

Well worth the time and trouble.

Isn't this like saying that driving on your tires isn't good for them? Well, yeah, it does wear them out but isn't that what they're designed and intended for?

Hi Owen

No it's more like using a combine to mow your gras while a lawn mower would do, why use a relative expensive lathe to do what you could do with a rather inexpensive sander, or to put it another way, why use a 18 wheeler when a pickup will do ??
