Dust Protection Filter

As anyone ever thought of replacing the cloth bag on a dust extractor with an air filter from a semi or some other big contruction equipment? Would that work? Would it provide enough protection? I've read that pleated filters give better performance than cloth bags but would this be a satisfactory replacement?

I have found that sometimes, the name or purpose given a specific item alters the price significantly even if the item is the same. My silver colored $9 bottle of table saw blade cleaner turned out to be no more than the supermarket's $2 bottle of oven cleaner for example. I also minutes ago read a post by someone looking for a cheap lathe where Darell suggested he check out the Palmgren 15" variable available at Amazon for $299. If I had know that grey paint cost so much more than blue paint, I wouldn't have given Sears $400 more than the Palmgren sells for! Damn!

Could a big truck's air filter cartridge be a good replacement for a cloth air bag?

Might. Some are directional, with progressively tighter fiber on the protected side. Run the wrong way and it would clog faster. Pleats give much more surface area in the same space, of course.

Been done. Only you need several of them stacked to get sufficient airflow and they may not last very long before clogging. Also, you won't save a heck of a lot if anything over a Wynn Environmental filter unless you can get the truck filters used for free or super cheap. Before you do anything with a dust collector take a look at .

Thanks J. and others

I had forgotten about that site. It is a gold mine. I've dumped the heavy duty filter idea as you all suggested. A friend has access to small dust bags that I can probably rig onto my dust collector to increase air flow. I'll also vent the bags on the outside of the shop.

I appreciate everybody's input. Thanks all
