Establishing Sales & Marketing Group

I've become involved in some preliminary footwork having to do with starting an organization that will promote the marketing and sales of local turners. The folks involved are all members of the local AAW chapters and are looking to start a group separate from the AAW affiliation with an emphasis on sales instead of education. The org will help with guidance and support in gaining gallery entrance, show space and such. Way down the road, hosting a turning show/sale could be a possibility.

Has anyone out there started or know of a similar organization who would be willing to pass along some info and perhaps some guidance on direction, pitfalls, framework, etc.? Feel free to email me directly if you desire.

************************************* Owen, While not a turner specific group, the Texas Mesquite Association began about 12 years ago and has grown to quite a sucessful organization. Our original aim was to promote the use of, and public knowledge of, mesquite and the beautiful products that could be produced from it. As fund raisers, a yearly art festival has been held in Fredricksburg, in the Texas hill country. It has grown from a part of a pavilion to 2 packed pavilions plus a circus type tent, all juried entries. The resulting fees finance promotional materials and scholarships for Industrial Arts students interested in careers in woodworking. We also have a semminar each spring that is like a mini Texas Turn or Two, except that it may cover any type woodworking. You can see some examples of the show and other details at
