Gloat just got 3 new tools from Lee Valley

Hi All :) a newbie here, just picked up a lathe last week (JET) 36" and a not so cheap set of chisels. Today I treated mysself to 3 new bowl gouges 1/4, 3/8 and a 1/2'' from lee valley. Question: I'm not afraid of anything except destroying a beautiful set of tools. Would someone please explain in laymans terms which is the correct way of hollowing out a bowl from start to finish. I will admit that i'm a newbie to wood turning but seasoned in the shop. So far I have been struck in the chest twice with a chunk of wood in the past few nights and i think i now have a third nipple.Any advice would be appreciated tks Dan

First off stand to the side when you start it. Also look for Darrel Feltmates web site. It is great for all sorts of turning info. You will want to book mark it. He has a section on green bowl turning. just found it. Try

Dan,

The bowl-turning video by Del Stubbs is well worth watching--he's a cool guy and a fine teacher. It's available from Taunton Press (the publishers of Fine Woodworking); many libraries carry it as well.

More of the same ol' advice you hear all the time: find a teacher and take a few lessons. I read books (I now have a small library of 4) & watched tapes but I learned far more in a few lessons. There is nothing like a teacher standing beside you saying "you're pushing the handle, not moving your body" when I would have swore I was moving my body. Or my biggest mistake, "slow down, let the gouge do the cutting!" Or "rub the bevel" :) :) All things I thought I was doing, but not.

Have fun. Earl
