Jet 1236 lathe noise

My Jet lathe has always been noisy but is now getting progressively worse. Everything seems to work ok and the noise is less if I set the speed control between stops. I have had the speed control mechanism apart and cleaned. I can't figure the source of the noise (a rather loud banging) but appears to have something to do with the speed control. The racket is at its worst in the slow speed setting. I would like to sell the lathe but would not consider doing so until I can solve the noise problem.

Any Ideas? Thanks - Doug

**************************************************** Doug, I have a 1236 clone, so yours may be slightly different, but I had a noise in mine when I first turned it on. It sounded like it was coming from the pulley area, but it turned out to be the motor cover on the outside end was rubbing slightly. Apparently the noise was being transmitting through the motor shaft to make it appear to be coming from the variable speed assembly. Your problem may be different, but it is easy to check, and easy to fix, if that is the problem. Good luck,

Ken Moon Webberville, TX.

Thanks for suggestions. After checking everything one more time I find that the sliding portion of the speed changer fits rather loose over the keyway. I don't know if it designed to be loose so it can easily slide or what but the recess for the keyway is way oversized. This fact coupled with a belt that appears to jump a great deal results in the sliding pulley rattling on the shaft. The stationary portion fits snugly over the keyway. This problem must be common since I know of two others that had the same problem but could not determine the source. Both parties have since sold their lathes.
