jpaulfennel - taking piercing to another level

I'm continually being amazed at all the directions turning has, and continues, to take. When I think I've seen the best of one turning path someone points me to yet even more amazing work.

If you like hollow forms with aeshetics taken to the Nth Degree, and pierced pieces intrigue you, you might want to spend some time on this site. And don't just study the photos, but read the text as well.

To have such a soul is unusual. To have the hands to express such a soul - in wood - amazing!

ps - the juxtaposition of this man's creations with the charred black chunk of wood on the cover of a recent American Woodturner magazine from AAW . . .

This is really depressing. Makes my poor work look like something to feed the dog in.

If you consider the hours it takes to do these, you won't feed quite so bad. A while back I was looking for interesting new texturing techniques and ran across a photo of one of these pieces. I tried it. It takes forever with a die grinder. The back fatigue from hunching over a piece is horrific. It was enough to consider a buying a laser cutter - if I could afford it. But they sure look cool.

Which bring to mind Binh Pho also. Just finished watching two of his dvd's and it's impressive to see his work. Add to all that piercing airbrushing.
