Looking to buy Nova DVR lathe, Please help locate

Greetings!!

I am at the point now where I want to retire my shopsmith 10er and move to a "real" lathe. After much, much research, I think the Nova DVR is going to be my best bet.

I considered the Jet 1642 and the Vega 2400. But, it boiled down to portability. As I see it, there is no way in hell for me to get a "big iron" lathe down into my basement. So, I am thinking that the nova would be more portable and more expandable for future needs.

Which brings us to where we are now... Where can I find one at a good price? Plus, to help, I live in a northern Detroit suburb (and I know about woodcraft). I am looking for other locations.

Thanks for your help!

Rob,

You may be in trouble. I just received my Nova DVR this week. It was from a shipment that arrived in the US recently. Mine came from Packard Woodworks. When I ordered it, Brad told me that I had gotten the last machine from his part of the current shipment.

I had also called Woodcraft. They told me there were none available from the current shipment. So...good luck! Best suggestion is to get on the phone and start checking with any vendor within a reasonable distance from you home and try to locate one.

I doubt that price will be an issue, just finding one will be a problem.

One other thing, the next batch from New Zealand will carry a higher price.

Wish I had better news but this is how it looks from here.

I question the portability problem. I recently brought my Jet 1442 home from work in my sedan and brought it into my 2nd floor shop. Compared to the 18" bandsaw, 8" jointer and cabinet saw... it was a piece of cake.

I think that the 1642 uses the same leg set as the 1442. Each end of the leg set weighs about 75 lbs... very gruntable for a single person. remove the headstock tailstock and banjo and it's all pretty managable.

I would share your concern if the headstock and bed were one piece.

Mine is originally from the one in Canton. Check the places at:

Going farther afield, I fear shipping and duty become players.

For the Canadian authorized supplier.

Really far afield.

If you don't mind reconditioned the service center has some. Contact Tim 1-866-748-3025 at the service center.

When I was shopping I looked long and hard for a Vega owner but failed to find any in order to get a recommendation.

I have my DVR > Greetings!!

It has been my experience that factory reconditioned items are generally just as good as the new version (or sometimes better).

I will give Tim a call and see what he has to say.

I also have an email to teknatool to see if there really is a new version coming out. But, after 3 days, I still have not heard anything.

What is the "service center?"

Do they have a web site?

No web site. You have to call him or send him an email at snipped-for-privacy@aol.com

Tim Geist is the guy that repares all Technatool products in the US. I've purchased reconditioned Nova chucks from him a couple times and most recently a bag of screws to hold jaws on my nova chucks. I think anything made by nova that is returned as defective to a store gets sent to Tim.

William, thanks for the technatool info. I've tried several times to email them directly and have never gotten a response (Rob, don't hold your breath).

This is a bit OT, but I have 2 nova superchucks that are 1-2 years old. Both are developing lateral play in the jaws. Does anyone here know of a cure? Would a good cleaning do the job?

thanks for the help.
