Musing about my workshop

Hello, i am new to this group, but i would like to start with a little musing . . . .

I have been turning for about 2 years now, and i love it, and have made a few good things. But i often find myself making gadgets for my lathe, trimming and finetuning it, or just experimenting with things i would like to try. And it is just af much fun as turning or even more sometimes . . . . . Another funny thing, as soon as i walk into my workshop i turn on the radio, it is an absolute MUST !!, i know i can not hear it while using any of the machines, but . . . .

Does anyone else have any thoughts about this ??

Yes, You have become addicted. Run now, it is still not too late. Get = away or there will be no hope. Since you will no doubt not take my = advice (I didn't) kick back and enjoy the addiction.

I have the same "problem", I went once to make a pen, I ended wasting more than two hours trying to tune my bandsaw - didn't work...

About the radio - same here. Lucky me, I work mostly with hand tools, and my lathe is only a Mini, so it doesn't make so much noise - I can actualy hear the radio. It is something with the human brain, I believe, we can not take to much silence or monotanious sound (white noise, etc...) we need some distraction. One of my main attractions to hand tools is the quietness factor - I love Jazz, so I get both hobbies at the same time!

When I build my perfect shop a high priority will be a quality sound system!

Just a small thing though, in this group, Arch has the monopoly on musings :-)

Hi Anders, welcome to the group. Please share your experiences with us and muse all you want. My line is: "I like to make things _for my lathe as much as things _on my lathe." Some say they can't tell the difference! :)

Hi Moshe, Thanks, but it's truly a _really small thing. Keep safe over there.

I recently made a tray (I think the Brits call it a 'lathe tidy') that rides in the gap of the bed to keep abrasives and finishes nearby. I also mounted a roll of paper towels on the far end of it (I fold them up into swabs and use them to apply the CA to pens). Works nice and keeps me from havinf to either balance things on the bed ways or turn around each time I need something.

The lathe tidy pairs up with a rack I made when I first got my lathe that holds most of my lathe cutting tools.

I also got creative and put a router table in the right wing of my Craftsman 10" table saw with a fence I saw in Shop Notes.

BTW, if you like making stuff for our shop, Shop Notes is a good magazine to have a subscription to. I've already renewed once and will probably renew indefinitely.
