Questions a pre solid-state electrician should look up but didn't. Don't laugh.

Is the transformer or the nichrome wire, the load? Does the transformer transform the load? ie. Is the load on the mains supply inductive or resistive? Even when chopped at zero crossing isn't the sine wave distorted, and isn't a pure sine wave the only shape that can get thru a network unscathed? Can pure sine waves be made using solid state devices? Why didn't the backlash from Ford spark coils, vibrator power supplies and 400 cps WW II gear destroy them. I can't use a cheap cigar lighter 12 ->110 V converter to run my carbatec, can I?

Yep, I'm all chopped up, Arch

Fortiter,
