I've been commissioned by SWMBO and daughter to turn a peppermill for each of them by Christmas. I'd like to use Purpleheart for one and either Cocobolo or Bocote for the other. But...I'm concerned that these woods may introduce some toxicity to the pepper. Is this a problem or am I worrying about something that is a non-problem. Should I coat the inside of the mills with polyurethane or epoxy?

From what I have read, either one would be appropriate. "Salad Bowl Finish" from Rockler is polyurethane without the added hardners (cures COMPLETELY much faster than desktop finish) - any polyurethane finish COMPLETELY CURED is food safe. There are several epoxy finishes out there that are food safe (I'll go look up the name off the cans for one if you want). Either solution would be acceptable. I use both types of finish for spoons, mugs, chalices and chop sticks. (The "Salad Bowl Finish" has to be renewed after a few years use if you are using it for hot and cold beverages) Wm G.
