play in supernova insert for NOVA DVR

I noticed something with my super nova chuck. The chuck seemed to wabble on the DVR spindle unless I used the set screw. During the course of turning it would loosen and I would have to tighten it again. What gives? I got the insert at woodcraft and I've been using the chuck for at least a year on the grizzly lathe with no problems. I got a tight fit and never even thought of using the set screw.

I dunno about what you have, but the back side of the insert on any chuck should seat firmly against the shoulder on the spindle of the lathe. If it won't thread on far enough to do that, you may have to make or buy a spacer.

The other possibility is that the flat end of the chuck thread insert may not be seating against shoulder on the DVR spindle. (or both.)

Most likely, it is the wrong insert. My guess is that you have ended up with a M33 x 3.5 insert which is the size used on the DVR in Europe (and is also the size for most Oneway lathes). Likely it accidently got mislabled or mispackaged. So it is a DVR insert, but not the 1.25 x 8 used for the US lathes.

I got a chance to look at the nova chuck last night before it got dark

I took it off and removed the insert. After pulling the set screws out it was difficult to remove from the spindle. This made me worry that I had cross threaded it but when I examined all the threads I could see no damage.
