Nova DVR 3000 Error Messages

Hi all,

I purchased a Nova DVR 3000 woodturning lathe about two months ago. Up until today I've been relatively satisfied with it. However, when I turned it on this morning, I got the following error message on the LCD readout:

**** FAULT **** RP STATE FAULT 1

I've turned off the machine in order to reboot the computer, but that hasn't solved the problem. The fuse is fine. The indexing stop/detent is free, so there's nothing bind the motor. The motor spins freely. Is anyone familiar with this error code?

Any and all help/ideas/advice would be appreciated and I thank you in advance for assistance rendered.

Hello Ali,

Try spinning the lathe with the power off a few times and then repower on the off chance that dust has accumulated on some of the sensors. Spinning it might blow the dust off. If that doesn't work, you better call the dealer where you bought it. I suppose that is Woodcraft. The motor on mine died just short of one year and it was replaced. My lathe was one of the earlier ones sold in the United States. They shipped me a new head, I installed it and put the old head back in the packing and they had it picked up. The new head is state of the art with faster speed adjustment, initial start speed of 500 rpm, and minimum speed of 100 rpm. Woodcraft and Teknatool are hard to beat when it comes to standing in back of their tools.

Incidentally, the new head came with a recommendation that I use a surge supressor in the line just as I do on my computer. Have you have any power outages lately?

Good luck with your machine.

I had a similar problem. I don't remember which fault number it was. I called Teknatool in NZ. They are very helpful. Turned out that my problem was due to a lot of dust building up on the sensors inside. They emailed me instructions on how to take the back plate off, lightly blow air and vacume inside the head stock until the dust was gone. It worked great and I was back in business in about 10 minutes. I would call them just to be sure. The web page is:

As the others have said, the RP State Error is related to the optical sensors that provide the spindle position feedback. Thus RP State stands for Rotor Position State. The sensors reside in an upper area at the back of the headstock, where they are attached to a small circuit board.

The error will be generated when the sensors are obscured, damaged or have become disconnnected. By far the most likely cause will be that they have become obscured by dust.

The sensors can often be cleared of dust by simply spinning the spindle by hand, which may create enough of an airflow to wisk away the dust. If this doesn't work, you can remove the red back plate (and perhaps the handwheel if you have it installed, and use a vacuum cleaner to clean the back screen (which you should do every six to nine months anyway--more often if you are using new Beall buffing wheels a lot). Don't cram the vacuum tip up against the screen, but locate it a bit away to moderate the vacuum. You might even want to spin the spindle by hand while doing this.

Put the back on again and see if the lathe now will function correctly, if not. Try vacuuming through the vent at the bottom of the headstock nose. Try again.

If this doesnt' work, try compressed air, but try to avoid a direct blast on the sensors. In general, it is better to vacuum that use compressed air, as the air can force more dust into various parts of the motor and electronics. I'd definitely not suggest using compressed air until you have cleared as much dust as possible by vacuuming.

It is highly likely your first attempts will work, and that you will not need to go through all these steps. If you do and you still get the error code, it is time to contact your dealer.
