Second Time Lucky???

Good morning friends (or afternoon, or evening, to those in other parts of the world).

I recently posted a message, to which no one replied or showed any interest. I don't know if it was the subject line or if people simply don't care to acknowledge one's accomplishments, but I'm going to try again, in the hopes that there are some woodturners out there who can share in the joy of another's excitement. The post was not so much ego as it was pride and excitement. (I'm hoping that at least Ruth, Ray, or Arch can give me an "attaboy.") So here goes a second attempt in the hopes of receiving at least some interest in the original post:

Dear Friends,

It's with great pleasure and honor that I'd like to announce that I have been selected, by jury, to be an exhibitor at the Stockley Gardens Fall Arts Festival, being held in the Ghent section of Norfolk on October 18 and 19,

2003.

It's my hope that, following a successful first showing (and winning an award) at the Virginia Beach Boardwalk Art Festival this year, I'll have an even more successful second showing. It's my goal to win a first place award at this show, so keep your eyes peeled on my web site for some unique and truly exception pieces.

For those of you who live close enough to visit or will be exhibiting, I look forward to seeing you there. If you do visit my booth (booth number to be provided when I find out), keep in mind that Christmas is just around the corner! >;o)

Stay healthy, happy, and sufficiently wealthy!

Warmest regards to one and all!

Ali,

Same here. I don't recall seeing the first post.

Congratulations all the same though. I know it is tough to get into these things. Remeber my father being juried for his work.

Ali, you have to slip the initials "LDD" into your Subject line. That always gets a reply! *G* I went back on the messages and found your un-remarked upon message. Mea Culpa! I read it and said "That's nice." And went no further with it as I am just a humble hobby turner with no great talents other than to rile up the anti-LDD reactionaries. In any event, my congratulations on your selection as an exhibitor and I wish the very best in the competition. I am sure the big guns (Ruth, Arch and Ray) will also pass along their encomiums also.

Sorry Ali for my seeming not to care. I am very pleased to offer a sincere "Attaboy", even an "Ataturk" (not Kemal). Where I grew up, juries awarded cell numbers not booth numbers, hence my caution. I never earned an award although a couple of my bootlegger uncles were given several.

All best wishes for a successful exhibition. If you win first place or not, you will honor all of us who turn wood. I Hope all your sailing is a fair run downhill before the wind. Arch

YOu have done something her ethat Ihave noteven tried yoet - to get juried into a show - attaboy! I have only done 2 shows and both were not my best outings. I tend to keep to closed venue type sales and word of mouth.

I hope this one is a great success!

Good Luck and God's Speed!

ATTABOY, Ali! : ) And I sure do hope you get the award at the show. I know how exciting it is to get into your first juried show so good luck.

Sorry I didn't respond to the first post, but I don't remember seeing it since I don't get the the ng too often these days. Problem with posts that don't get responses is that they get lost at the bottom of the pile real quick.

None of us will miss your post about how wonderfully you did at the show! : )

Hello, one and all!

And thanks for the sentiments. In retrospect, I've come to realize how "needy" my post sounded. I guess, in a sense it was. I don't get much interaction with other woodturners (I'm guilty of not attending enough TToV meetings); this newsgroup seems to be my major form of communication with others. So I guess that was my way of "seeking" some encouragement. Being a self-taught woodworker/woodturner, I find myself frequently questioning my reasons for creating a particular form or piece of art. And I don't always know if what I've created has been worth my time. I guess the only way to tell will be when/if a piece sells.

Anyhow, I digress. I actually meant to thank you all for taking the time to look at my site and for your well-wishes for the Art Festival. I'm truly excited about being selected! :o)

Leif, I'll definitely take your suggestion into consideration next time I post. "LDD..." Now why didn't I think of that??!! Of course, then I'd probably end up having everybody in the newsgroup hounding me for false-subject-lining or something!!! Or they'd just use it as an excuse to continue the LDD argument! >:o)

Arch, gotta say: I was amazed when you made reference to Attaturk. Not too many people (outside of Turkey) know about him. So what's your excuse? >;o) Have you ever been? (By the by, do you have a web site with your work showing?). As far as honoring woodturners: I'll try do you all some justice! I always try to get people interested in turning. At the least, I try to educate them to the fact that it's not just a craft; it's ART and it takes a lot of skill! :) In fact, one of the things I like to do is place a rough-turned piece, chucked, half-finished, in plain view so that people will ask me what it is; that gives me the "excuse" to engage them in conversation and to start explaining all about turning! >;o)

Ray, as always, thanks for the kind words! It' always encouraging to read your posts/replies. And I'm sure you're selling yourself short by saying they weren't your "best outings." I know that on the first day, I'm going to be petrified, but it'll pass. Then I'll just go into salesperson mode! Not only do I have to sell my art, I have to sell myself as an artist, and woodturners as artists and artisans also! I'm willing to bet that you wouldn't have any problem doing the same once you got past the initial burst of the adrenaline rush! >;o)

Ruth, thanks for the words of encouragement. And you betcha I'll be telling all about it after all's said and done! :o) If I get an opportunity, I'll take some photos during the whole thing and post some on my website. That way, you can all "live vicariously through my experience!"

Whew! Okay, this has been a long post! (Thanks to anyone who's read this far

Owen mentioned Handsome which is one of my Bantam roosters who became a father a few months ago. Cute OT story:

Someone dropped off a pregnant cat who I had living in the barn. I have a chicken coop/house inside the barn (winter residence) and while the chickens were outside, the cat went inside the coop in one of the nesting boxes and had 6 kittens. I had to leave them there so the chickens and chicks were locked in every night with 7 cats.

When the kittens were 7 wks., my girlfriend took 2. She has reg. chickens and had a hen that was sitting. Now, when hens are in their last week of sitting (hatching), they will not get off the eggs for anything, not even a preditor (cats are preditors of chickens). In the morning she and her husband looked everywhere for the kittens, were getting very upset and they found the 2 kittens in the nesting box with the sitting hen, all curled up cozy and warm, sleeping. The hen just looked at them with a disgusted expression! Her chicks are now 4 weeks old and the kittens walk with them following the hen.

Just a cute animal story I thought I'd share with you. : )

Hello Ruth,

That's a great story. To bring this into a woodturning vein,

If those chickens and cats can manage to get along, I guess those of us that have differing opinions on how to do things should be able to too! :)

Thanks for the wonderful story,

Dave

I guess one of the hens found him aptly named. :) Good story - can see it as a Disney movie - Babe, Milo & Otis, etc. Can you tell I've got a little one in the house?

Alan, my son only has 2 pictures scanned so far. The first,

shows Hansome feeding his son. Bantams are very family oriented chickens, usually the roosters aren't allowed near the chicks for 5 or 6 weeks.

The second picture,

shows Sundance on the roost (other chickens already outside) with the cat and her kittens in a pan used as a nesting box for the chickens. I have pictures of the chickens eating with the kittens at about 4 weeks old; the chickens loved kitten chow mixed with water!
