all the club links you can follow.Frank Pain, The Practical Woodturner is as good a basic text as you'll find,in my opinion. Old, as are most "basic" books, but you might find it in thelibrary or a used book store.

Welcome EVON, finding an old lathe and chisels might whet you appetite for woodturning... or may spoil your interest in a wonderful endeavor. Flea markets are littered with shoddy equipment that turned off beginners in many hobbies. If you can buy property, you likely can afford today's variety of proper starting equipment that will lead to many happy hours. Finding an old stove on the property is not a reason for you to take up cooking; another great hobby. Don't let your enthuiasm and progress be spoiled by beginning with questionably adequate 'found' gear.

Not meant to throw cold water on your find, keep it and enjoy returning to it later.... or use it now if _and only if_ your mentor advises that the lathe & tools are good to learn on. Just an opinion of a crotchety old coot. Others may differ. Arch

Hi Evon. And welcome to what, hopefully, will become a very addictive hobby for you!

If you can tell me the state and nearest city in which you live, I can give you a list of contact information for woodturners in your area. Might even be able to provide you with the name of an instructor or two.

Either way, all I can add to what the others have said is, always respect the piece of wood that's turning on the lathe as it can do a lot of damage. Be safe, wear a face shield and dust mask at all times, and keep loose clothing out of the workshop! :)

Enjoy your new "old" toy!
