Powermatic 45 for sale

I'm the secretary for the Central Indiana Chapter of the AAW. Our club needs a new big lathe for demostrations. We have a Powermatic model 45. I have pictures of it that I took today (Sunday, February 8th, 2004), and I have posted them to a page I added to our clubs website.

will add a direct link to this from our front page if needed.)It has had a variable speed upgrade done to it as you can see in thepictures. The tailstock is still there, as is the tool rest. There are twoproblems we have with it. First is that the motor mount is sort of bouncy,so the belt will tend to slip when we turn anything big. The second problemis that we can't turn anything big on it inboard - more than a 12" diameterpiece.

(A third problem is that it's not portable for us, and we need something that is.)

It was originally purchased by two of our members many years ago, and we put almost $750 into the variable speed upgrade plus a new inverter about 4 or 5 years ago. We are trying, through the sale of this lathe, plus other things, to raise enough money so that the club can purchase either a new JET 1642 or (ideally) a Powermatic 3520A.

The club made it my job to sell this lathe. What I thought I would do is give the members of this group a chance to buy this before I put it onto eBay or into the paper. You guys would appreciate it more than anyone else would, anyway. Make a fair offer to us (okay, me, since I'm stuck with selling this) between now and next Sunday (February 15th, 2004) and save me a lot of trouble.

The lathe is currently at the Zionsville, IN, Boys and Girls Club (since that's where we meet). This is a suburb of Indianapolis. Shipping to you would be from there, and the lathe would either need to be picked up by you or we can arrange shipping with BAX Global. It is on a large mobile base that we built for it, so it would be easy to build sides around it and simply wheel it on and off of a liftgate truck. (I know we're looking at $250 - $300 in freight charges for this if you don't come pick it up yourself.)

If you need to see it before you decide, please let me know so I can make arrangements for you to get into the building.

Didn't I see your group doing demo turnings on a new Jet 1642 at the Fairgrounds several weeks ago? Or is that someone's personal lathe?

Too bad that you couldn't have had some indication that you were raising funds. I'm guessing you'd have raised some money at the show. I stopped by four times and you had a small crowd every time.

Good luck with the fund-raising. I'm enjoying my Jet 1442, but I'm sure the variable speed aspect of the 1642 would be an asset. And the Powermatic

3520 must be even nicer as well as more stable. I wish I lived closer to Indy--you'd have another member.

That, of course, begs the question on where do you live? We've got members from all over the state - I'm in Lafayette, actually, and another member comes down from Ft. Wayne, other guys come up from Bloomington. Are you the guys that were from Evansville? If so, I may have talked to you.

And if you're not already a member of AAW, go to their website and see if there is a turners chapter close to you.

Mishawaka, Carl. And no, there is no AAW chapter here, but there should be. Ft. Wayne is the closest chapter, with Indy a close second.

Perhaps I'll need to get a chapter going here, not that I have much spare time for such organizational endeavors.

There is a chapter in Ft Wayne. One of our members is also a member of both there and with us. If you want some contact information, let me know. (Or just look on the turners website.)
