Powermatic 4224

Hope someone can help me out on this one! My Powermatic Lathe is making a knocking sound and it gets worse with higher speeds. It is in sync with the speed of the lathe. Could this be a bearing going bad?

Yes, it could be. Good luck getting help from the factory. You might be able to isolate it using a stethoscope -- auto mechanics use them all the time so try an auto parts store such as a NAPA.

If there are provisions for increasing the preload on the bearing on that lathe (I don't own one) that might do the trick.

Not to sound funny, but it still will sound that way. Did you check to make sure you didn't leave the knockout bar inside the headstock? I know of more than one turner who has accidentally done this. It was even a discussion on the WoW site when someone asked a similar question.

You might want to check the set scews on thr pulleys. If loose, they will make a clacking sound.

Just a guess, but it might just be the set screw holding the pulley on the spindle. If that screw comes loose, often times you'll hear a knocking sound as the lathe is turning. Dan

Don't know the model, so pure speculation. Mine was making a similar noise once until I pulled the indexing pin for the spindle back enough to clear a rough spot on the plate.

At any rate, stethoscope or the old mechanic's trick of screwdriver touched various places on the exterior might help to localize it. Can you vary the preload on those bearings?

Thanks for all the advise but nothing seems to work.
