Purple Leaf Plum - any experiences?

As a result of hurricane Isabel, a neighbor lost a 30+ year old "Purple Leaf Plum". She's offered it (or most of it) to me. The trunk looks twisted - maybe interesting grain, and about 12" diameter. Yes, I'm going to help her dispose of the tree, some to my studio, the rest to where someone can remove it.

Does anyone have any insight as to what to expect? How does it turn, What color is the wood (I'll know if about an hour when I get the chain saw running), etc.

Most fruit trees are remarkable similar. Dense, tight and even grain. Usually light colored. Pear is a favorite turning wood for woodwinds. Also, part of the working mechanism for harpsichords are carved from pear.
