Shopping for Lathe in Indiana

I am considering starting up woodturning. I've been lurking hereabouts for several weeks now and believe I am in the first stages of addiction. I've gone so far as to start collecting wood - several nice large (50lb+) chunks of hard maple from a tree cut down outised my office back in April. Now there is a woodworking show in Indy Oct 11 I will be visiting and hope to get a look at some lathes in action.

I figure after saving my pennies I can get close to about $800 to put out for the purchase. From what I've been reading, I will need a grinder (approx. $80), the bandsaw can wait. I have a chainsaw I can cut up the large chunks with as well as a circular saw. I will need some chisels and gouges to get started. I'm hoping I can get a decent lathe for around $600-$700. The type of turning would be some bowls with a max diameter of

10-12" and some center work.

So, anyplaces around Indy (I am in Bloomington) other than the upcoming wood show where I can take a look at what's available?

Thanks.

Woodcraft has a new place on 86th in the Castleton area. Call for directions since it is in an odd location right off I69.

Check out the delta 46-715 lathe they have. It's in your price range and even some places sell it with a free set of high speed steel tools. There are alot of peopl who dislike delta. But I have had this lathe for over a year and had no problems. Another new turner came over and tried my lathe and then some others at the local tool store up here in Notre Dame country. He ended up liking the delta the best and bought it a few weeks ago

Hope this helps Ricc Havens Elkhart, IN

Also, try Winner Woodworking. There is a Jet or EMCO dealer and showroom on the east side on Post Road.

Go to Woodcraft. If the store in Indianapolis is like the stores in Cincinnati and Louisville you will a find a very knowledgeable and helpful staff.

The Delta 46 715 is a very nice lathe. I have one, but don't overlook the Jet JWL 1440. It's a good bit heaver and will work much better with the 50 lb chunks you have. After using the Delta I wish I had sent the extra $150 or so and gotten the Jet.

I saw a heck of a mark down on Jet Lathes I think maybe in the Tool Crib Catalogue I got a couple of days ago. I have never tried a Jet but don't care much for the looks of Jet or new Deltas, I like the old, heavy Deltas.

I can vouche for the new owners of the Indianapolis store. They own and operate the Woodcraft store here in Appleton, WI. They will bend over backwards for you.
