Tree question, Oak and Sycomore...

I have a question about two kinds of trees:

  1. I have some Oak that turns my fingers black when I am working with it. Any idea what kind of Oak does this?

  1. I just cut my first Sycomore logs. When looking at the end of the log there is an irregular pattern between the heart wood and the sap wood (ie the sap wood does not make a thin circle around the outside). Is this normal?

Thanks, Ted

Any kind of oak, or other woods with high tannic acid content will give you blue fingers.

Tree growth is influenced by so many factors that it's difficult to say what affects the growth at any time. It's the stresses of life that give the prettiest wood, though.

It has to do with the Tannic acid content. Any wood with a lot in it with stain your fingers. Use lemon juice to remove it. Just a little bit will remove all the staining.
