Variable-speed control box for Woodfast lathe

Howdy all,

I'm a woodturner from Washington and I've got a question that you might be able to help with. I have a Woodfast lathe, with a variable speed power control that was made by Denver Ulery, who passed away a few years back. It has just given up the ghost, and I?m not sure where to turn for either a replacement, or preferably, repair on this unit. I checked the fuses and found one on the inside of the unit that was blown, but whatever caused it to blow is still there, as a new fuse blew as well. Do you know if someone took over operation of his business making these control boxes? Or, where to find a replacement? I bought the lathe about 6 years ago from Craft Supply, and will be calling the first thing in the morning, but I didn't want to wait until then to get started on this. Any help will be appreciated, as I?m trying to finish adding to my inventory for the upcoming Bellevue art show and it's looking like I won't be doing it on the Woodfast without a miracle. :-)

Thanks, Jeff Wickman snipped-for-privacy@oz.net

ok, ok, we need some info - this is probably a $2 repair, but you haven't provided key data:

  1. DC motor or AC?
  2. 220 or 110
  3. horsepower?
  4. is there a brand name on the circuit card?

it's probably a bad scr or triac - these are cheap parts, just replace it - I'm presuming in that statement that it's a simple phase angle SCR controller.

I have a 16" Woodfast bowl lathe and a few years ago I upgraded it with one of Chuck Woodruff's variable speed units. It works great, never a bit of trouble and I can't imagine what it would be like to go back to belt changing for speed control.
