Wanted New or used variable speed wood lathe

I'm relatively new to turning and currently have a rikon midi lathe now. I'm wanting to move up to a variable speed lathe either new or used. The kicker is I can only afford around $500 or less for this toy. Any suggestions or web sites that could help. Thanks to all.

Hi Carl

Carl I think if you want to move UP , you should save your pennies a little longer, it also would help to tell us where you are, unless you want to add big $$$ shipping just my two cents.

What do you mean by variable speed? You don't already have pullies? That's variable speed. Or did you want continuously variable speed (as in a Reeves drive) or the considerably more expensive electronic variable speed (EVS)?

What types of turning to you like to do and what, specifically does your Rikon not do that you would like to do?

We need a little more data.

Craigslist is probably one decent outlet for you. A local turning club might be another.

$500 is a decent starting point. $5000 is a more logical ending point. ;)

Amazon has a couple of variable speeds at that price. The Palmgren is on sale at US$299.00 This is the same as my Craftsman 15" and a bargain at the price.
