I saw a picute the other day of the headstock of a lathe and there was a small pin that stuck out just next to the spindle. It was called out as an indexing pin but I have no idea on how it works or what it does..... I assume you use it to turn your piece to different degrees but I don't know what the pin "indexes" into...

A disc with holes drilled in it (often but not always a multiple of 12 -
24, 48 are common) which is affixed to the spindle. Helps to put reeds and flutes and spokes and such things in the right places, but I don't personally consider any of that "turning", though they are common decorations applied to turnings.Have something to add?
