What wood I can get in Mexico?

I am heading to Riviera Maya, near Cancun, for a vacation. Can I find anything interesting that I can bring back to the States?

Don't think this is possible even with NAFTA etc. :-) Check with your travel agent to be for sure but.......YOU CAN'T REMOVE ANY TYPE OF PLANT FROM MEXICO UNLESS IT GOES THRU CUSTOMS (including dead trees). This is what we were told at least. I caught a nice Mahi-Mahi (fish) and was told the locals will take good care of it for me, mount it and send to the states. They fed themselves with it and I got a plastic fish mount. It was to the exact size etc. but never the less plastic. This was blamed on customs as well. Don't get me wrong.........it is a very nice trip that you will completely enjoy, I just don't think they are going to let you carry much out of Mexico. If friends are pestering you about Cuban cigars...I think there is a 3 cigar limit. You can mail order a million of them but you won't get thru customs with more than 3. Again check your travel agent for up to date info. We went this time last year. Also get with Mac Davis over on the wreck (rec.woodworking) or here he seems to know a little about Mexico......he is moving there soon (Baja California area). He might be able to point you in the right direction. Good Luck and Enjoy Yourself Lyndell

Often I drive my PU Truck there and back.

Sometimes I have need a case to hold goods. Other times I needed to use wood to pack around some delicate objects. Other times I just use the wood to protect the truck bed liner.

Last Trip from Maz to Durango and on to Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo I got searched 15 times. They were looking for drugs -- and I am no contrabandista or narcotrafficante -- no problem.

It's all in the presentation.

Hope that's clear. :-)

Last thing I brought back was a case of 4.5% Corona.. lol

I haven't looked a lot, but there isn't much wood, at least in Baja.. on the rare occasions that they use wood for homes or framing, they use pine, as fir is VERY hard to get/import... Some types of cedar/tamarack grow thee, but not much.. the "Salton sea cedar" is interesting, but mostly in Calif...

No idea about cancun, but I'm guessing that it's too close to the coast for mesquite?
