I just got a SuperNova 2 chuck and it came with a woodworm screw. Nowhere in the instructions did it say what size hole is correct. Can someone enlighten me in fractional inch size?

3/8"The manual that came with the SN2 says "PREPARATION: The 10.5mm thread requires a drilled hole about 8mm (5/16") in diameter. The screw has considerable holding power and it is sometimes difficult to unscrew, so wax or oil the thread before mounting the wood."
So, I would say that you need a 5/16" pilot hole, or 8mm if you have metric bits.

IIRC I always end up with a hole that's too small, and sometimes can't get the wood mounted. I think I've learned to use a slightly larger drill for hardwoods, but then again, I usually experiment to see what gives the "right" holding power for the wood I'm using. For example, you don't need a lot of holding power for a 4" bowl, compared to a 12" bowl.
Thanks! I have always used a faceplate to rough the outside and chuck mount, will give the screw a try.
You may never use a faceplate again.. *g*
I use the woodworm screws so much with my Talon chucks that I dedicated a $20 Harbor Fright drill for it... Nice to have it handy with the bit chucked and ready.. I have a stop on it at 3/4", also.. Mac
