Woodworm screw

I just got a SuperNova 2 chuck and it came with a woodworm screw. Nowhere in the instructions did it say what size hole is correct. Can someone enlighten me in fractional inch size?

The manual that came with the SN2 says "PREPARATION: The 10.5mm thread requires a drilled hole about 8mm (5/16") in diameter. The screw has considerable holding power and it is sometimes difficult to unscrew, so wax or oil the thread before mounting the wood."

So, I would say that you need a 5/16" pilot hole, or 8mm if you have metric bits.

IIRC I always end up with a hole that's too small, and sometimes can't get the wood mounted. I think I've learned to use a slightly larger drill for hardwoods, but then again, I usually experiment to see what gives the "right" holding power for the wood I'm using. For example, you don't need a lot of holding power for a 4" bowl, compared to a 12" bowl.

Thanks! I have always used a faceplate to rough the outside and chuck mount, will give the screw a try.

You may never use a faceplate again.. *g*

I use the woodworm screws so much with my Talon chucks that I dedicated a $20 Harbor Fright drill for it... Nice to have it handy with the bit chucked and ready.. I have a stop on it at 3/4", also.. Mac
