Crochet Gauge Question

Hi Everyone,

I've been crocheting a long time and have never really worried about gauge too much when it comes to afghans. However, I'm about to make an afghan using my scrap worsted acrylic and I'd like to have some control over the dimensions. The labels tell you what sized hook to use, but give what I think is the knitted gauge that one can expect. Also, I've looked online for crochet gauges and am not really getting anywhere.

I guess what I need to do is crochet a swatch using the knitting rows and stitches suggested, measure it and figure out how to get a 4 inch square? Does anyone have a good way to come up a crocheted swatch?

Thanks, Mirjam,

That's exactly what I needed.

That is all very good advice, Mirjam, thanks. I'm just using up all my old acrylic yarn and making various afghans. The one I'm working on now is just plain rows of double crochet, but I'm using the Fibonacci series to do the stripes.

I should keep a journal about the different yarns and patterns I use and how I like them. I guess I do that in my knitting blog.

Thanks again, friend,

Hesira

Hesira here is what i do i cast on 20 dc [ double crochet ] and work 5 rows , than i lay it on a table and write down

20 dc with hook number X = Y cm

20: y = your number of stitches for 1 cm , now multipy this in the length you want ,,, mirjam

You are welcome Hesira!!! for a moment i was afraid i wasn`t getting it the right way , than decided to start with this, and if you will write it wasn`t what you meant , try more ,,, I also advice you keeping this details, with the wool`s name ,,,,in a copybook, i also remark about the wool`s behaviour ,,,,, [ things like ,,, in this pattern the wool felt ,,,,,, in that pattern the wool felt ,,,,] sometimes you will find remarks like`i worked 10 cm in this pattern and didn`t like it `,,, etc.... i forgot to mention that if you intend to work in a pattern , better do the guague ALSO in that Pattern as well as in the plain Dc ,,, If you can sprae the wool , keep your swatches and collect them into a box later to be used , mirjam
