Intro.......

Im a newbie who posted a question (pattern explanation... please) a few days ago and received some wonderful advice.

My name is Carol and I've just started to teach myself to knit. My aunt taught me to knit and purl when I was in elementary school. I never made anything, I'd just knit and purl a flat piece then rip and start over needless to say that got boring and I quit and never picked up needles again till just recently ( about 45 years later that is-- LOL). I purchased some yarn for my mother-in-law (she crochets) and she didn't like the texture but I decided to keep it since it was so pretty. Well now what to do with it??? I started a baby afghan with a pattern from An old "Vogue Dictionary of knitting stitches. It's in the eyelet and lace section. I never start projects that are easy I just dive right in. With the help of the internet and some knitting books I'm learning the different stitches needed.

I dabble in embroidery, sewing, crosstitich, and various other needle related areas. I am by no means and anything but a beginner in all of these. I guess someday I'll find something I just love-- maybe it's knitting, I do know it better be soon cause I'm running out of years LOL. Thanks for the opportunity to say a few words. I'm reading and learning so much from this group and for that I thank everyone of you. Carol

Carol, I've been lurking the past few days, as I had been out of town and just now getting caught up on all of the postings....but, I am glad to see that you decided to introduce yourself. Welcome! I know you had some great answers to your pattern question. Ask away any time you have any others. There's no such thing as a dumb question.

Carol, you'll find this group to be friendly, helpful, and FUN! We tend to go off-topic (OT) a *lot*, but that's what makes us so diverse and fun! (we also learn alot, even if it isn't crafting related, grin!) Welcome to the best NG (newsgroup) on the 'net! Hugs, Noreen in Central Tennessee, USA

Hi Carol,

I'm joining Janise and Noreen and saying you've come to the greatest group on the web. Now, that you are knitting, maybe you'll also try crocheting. I do both, but mainly crochet now and there are a lot of things and more stitches then in knitting.

Hugs,

I'm piggy-backing Nora and the others in welcoming you. I also knit and crochet... Taught myself to knit in my teens after briefly learning plain knitting (no purling even) in the last week of elementary school. Went about four years without touching the knitting needles and kind of forgot, so I had to teach myself all over again. Then my aunt was here for summer holidays and she showed me how to purl... after a few years I taught my Mom the basics to knitting, unfortunately she never had much time to actually learn more... so I would cast-on, and cast-off for her and she'd knit strips of color in between.

For many years though I kept looking at the tiny crochet instructions in the back of my knitting pattern books and *tried*, but could never manage to get it. Then one day a few years ago I saw that Lewiscraft in the nearby city was going to give lessons. I bought the supplies, and took them down to the riverside to sit for a couple of hours while I waited for the first lesson. I was either ready to learn this time, or the instructions in the new book I had just bought were much better... or both... because within those couple of hours of reading the instructions and trying a few things... I managed to do ALL the swatches the book taught. When I went to my first lesson with my swatches in hand, the instructor said "For someone who doesn't know how to crochet, you did all the swatches I was going to teach... alone." LOL

Mind you... years before I had been goofing around with a crochet hook and didn't have a clue what I was doing, but I ended up making a sweater for my dog... little leg holes and all. LOL Then I also made a couple of bags for holding bingo chips in... my Mom and I used to go to bingo back then. Funny, I had forgotten about those bingo chip bags that I had made until just this second as I was typing. :o)

At the moment however, I'm not doing much yarnwork at all... I hate working with yarn in the heat. Besides, I have Fibromyalgia and have to wait until my hands and arms decide that they will allow me to hold the weight of an afghan... or whatever I happen to be working on.

I too have dabbled in many crafty things from needle crafts to candle making to basket weaving. I stick with something for a little while and then "say that was nice but now I know how to do it that's enough". My bookshelves are a testimony to the many things I've tried but I keep coming back to knitting. I think that's because I haven't run out of new things to try and learn. I haven't gotten boarded with it yet. Maybe you will also find this to be the case.
