Intro. from a Newbie

Hi Everyone,

I've recently made the jump from counted cross-stitch to knitting as my needlework of choice and needed to change my online activities accordingly.

A little bit about myself - I am an English professor at a community college in Pennsylvania and live with my husband, daughter, and five dogs. With the move from part-time to full-time teaching four years ago, my needlework time took a serious hit, and I am just finding my way back to my chair on a regular basis.

I'm currently working on some slippers and lapghans for a local assisted living facility and "Shaded Jacket" from Knitting in No Time by Reader's Digest (and may I add that I don't really think an entire jacket on size 7 needles takes exactly "No Time," but of course this is jsut my opinion!).

I am trying to get up the nerve to start some socks. I've ordered yarn and needles to try some spiral rib socks for starters because the whole heel/gusset thing scares the bejeebers out of me!

Hi Joy,

Welcome to this great group. Myself I don't do socks, but you've come to the right place if you need help, these gals and guys are fantastic with them. I mainly crochet afghans for Project Linus and nursing homes.

Joy,

Welcome to our group.

Do not be afraid of the sock pattern. I knitted for over 20 years before I tried the infamous sock pattern. Now, I can't get enough sock knitting. Just do a search on "knit sock pattern", you will get a ton of info. I will leave you with several.

A very big welcome to you Joy from "down under". Pennsylvania is one of my favourite USA States and we have spent quite a bit of time there especially around the Easton area. Enjoy your knitting and this is a wonderful group for help if you get into strife. Since moving to a warm climate years ago my choice is counted crossstitch which I really love. God Bless Gwen

Welcome to the group.

Good luck with your socks. I do most of my crocheting and knitting for a local hospital for disabled children.

I do cross-stitch when I have a chance but know it does take a lot of time.

Hi Joy - I'm another counted cross-stitcher who has added knitting. I took a sock class just to get through one sock. We learned a short row heel instead of the heel flap/gusset heel, I liked it because it doesn't require "picking up" stitches.

In fact, I finished my second sock and now have a Pair of Socks!!! I learned on dp needles and I quite like them and am accumulating lots of tiny sets!

Welcome, and don't let a little thing like a heel or gusset be overwhelming DA

Welcome, Joy. I love knitting socks. I just wish I had more time to do it! I have far too many projects on needles at the same time, and the socks take a back seat, unfortunately. That is because they are for me, and I do most of my knitting for other people. I will warn you that, once you start socks, you will find them addictive.

Welcome Joy , i was facinated by the title of "No time knitting".....sounds a very Patronalistic name given to this project By some Editor, who probably doesn`t knit often ,,,,,may you have loads of patience and joy in your work. mirjam

Thanks to all for the welcome! You are certainly encouraging me to give the socks a try.

My weekend was a balanced one, I guess - some paperwork, some housework, some shopping, and some knitting. Why is it that I still feel like I didn't get enough knitting???

Oh well, maybe this evening.

Hi Joy,

Welcome to the group!

The first sock I did was a 2-needle miniature sock so I could try out a pattern w/out having to invest too much time into the project. I liked it and have moved on to other types of socks, round knit on DPNs, crocheted flat and round (currently working on designing my own practical yet easy crochet sock pattern), and knit flat on 2 needles or knit flat on a knitting machine. Please jump in and you'll find a wealth of help here if you need it, and I'm sure your feet will be in handmade socks in no time!

BTW, the mini sock pattern I used was at

in the free pattern section. They have several 2-needle sock patterns, including the one I used to learn sock knitting.

Hi Joy & Welcome!

I am a newbie here also and have found everyone to be really nice and helpful. I also just started knitting socks. They are fun and addictive and pretty quick to knit. Believe it or not, the heel/gusset is my favorite part. Changes things up a little

Thanks for the link! I looked over alot of them-what a staggering collection. I am about to start my 3rd pair of socks, this one for my littlest guy. He wants them to be purple, so I went out & bought purple yarn just for him. I'll post pictures of the the other 2 pairs when my husband takes his off and I when I can get a pic of mine!

Leah! I can't believe you found this pattern. When I was getting back into knitting and 'fore changing my knitting method to allow for using DPNs, I made quite a few potholders and such for the kitchen ... this "tube" knitting on two needles. I tried (without success) to adapt it to make socks or even leg warmers. Even though I now knit socks using DPNs, I'm gonna try this pattern just to see it work out. :o)

Joy, welcome to the group! I was reading through these posts and intending to add my welcome at the end of this thread till I saw this cool post and link from Leah. Katherine's right -- once you get started knitting socks, you'll find they're completely addicting. LOL (I dubbed Katherine "the sock lady" ... she surely knows! And since I dubbed her that, I've seen that there are many other sock experts here

-- both male and female.)

This is a great group with many experts in each little niche, it seems. And they're always ready to jump in and help everybody else. They helped me "through" my first sock (!!!), and I'm sure they will you too. I made a pair of those no-heel, no-gusset rib socks after doing the regular ones, and they weren't near so satisfying. Not as comfortable to wear, either. Go for the heeled ones! LOL

Welcome again, and bcnu here, hopefully. Smiles, Eve
