Intro. from a Newbie

Oh dear, the temptation gets stronger, and the yarn for my spirals isn't even here yet! So what about a little sock loom? I ordered a couple of those over the weekend also.

Meanwhile, my jacket is coming along well as I debate the socks. That's a good thing!

Hey again, Joy!

To tell you the truth, I'd never thought about using a sock loom till you questioned it. To me, it seems like a large version of the "knitting knobby" our mommies gave us when we were little to keep us busy and quiet. LOL I'd think it would be very different producing anything via this method .... I mean, it's kinda like a completely different craft than hand knitting. Personally, I love the feel of the yarn going through my fingers, love the needles and the whole process.

Perhaps others will have a different opinion....... Don't know how to change the title of this thread so that they might notice, but perhaps they'll see this in the "still active" box and give us a good debate about the looms. :o)

And oh! What's your jacket like? Got pics!? Eve :o)

I do have the nifty knitter and throw a hat once in a while (sounds like pottery when I say it that way, doesn't it), which is what made me think about it for socks. I'm sure I will jump in with the needles before too long. Knowing myself, I'll probably try it several ways and end up with many matchless socks!

I'm thinking about setting up a blog somewhere, maybe this weekend. If not, I'll resurrect my old Webshots album and get some knitting pictures into it. The jacket is basic stockinette, knit in one piece starting at the right wrist. I have finished the right sleeve and am beginning the right front/back section. The pattern calls for Sirdar Yo-yo, but my lys didn't have that, so I ended up with plum print Amore by Coats & Clark. So far, it is working up well.

About the spiral sock decision: have you ever tried wearing tube socks? If not, either borrow some from someone who wears them, or spend a few dollars at the Dollar Store or equivalent, and try it. That should tell you whether you like the feeling of a heel-less sock. It's worth it if it saves you days of knitting time that might be wasted on socks you don't like.

If you can knit that, you can do socks.

Thanks for all the links. I finally had a chance to begin to explore them last night, and WOW! I am seriously overwhelmed now (and seriously ready to jump in - see how I am?).

Hi there and Welcome. I live over in NJ right off of Rt. 78. I love to go to PA, and have a trip scheduled to the Lancaster area in April.

I am glad you are getting back to knitting. Sounds like you have a lot of projects going to keep you busy! Have fun!

I also like to cross stitch and I flip flop back and forth from XS to crochet. I am learning to knit, but crochet as much as I can.

Looking foreward to your posts, Diane

Well, I've got to get them cleaned & blocked again. DH wears them about everyday, and I can hardly get them off his feet. I just finished the 1st of a pair for my littlest one. I'll try to get some pics up & show them to you.

Hey!, Joy, Tamar and Mirjam!

Joy, the nifty knitter can be used as a sock loom, can't it? I truly did LOL at you saying you'll probably try several different ways and end up with many matchless socks! That's just what I do with all kinds of projects ........ LOLOLOL

Your jacket sounds wonderful ... and I agree totally with Tamar that if you can do that you can surely do socks. I'm FAR from expert (or even adept!!) at knitting, and I found the socks easy and fun to do (once the great people here explained what one of the abbreviations in the instructions meant!) I was quickly addicted and love making 'em. :)

RE getting pics up for us to see, lots of members use Webshots and Yahoo Photos ... and another that I can't think of the name for right now (sometimers here!) Some have websites; and YarnWright (aka Noreen) has a few, I think.

Tamar's suggestion of finding cheap tube socks and seeing if you like 'em is a great one. I don't like the bought ones and should've known I wouldn't like my own 'fore I knitted 'em. LOL

And Hi there, MirJAM!!! LOL Long time no talk. I know you've been incredibly busy; I've been watching the posts and news from and about you. :) I know, MirJAM isn't right -- I just can't get it through my head that it's pronounced like Miriam ... so maybe you'll eternally be MirJAM to me. :) Here's a link to see what a sock loom is. I'm sure you'll immediately recognize it to be like what I call the Knitting Knobby. Your momma probably made one for you too -- just had a different name perhaps. :)

Hallo EVE ,, [Saturday we opened an exhibition called "A Present for Eve & her daughters " !!!!!} yes my name is spelled the DUTCH way , but is pronounced like the regular miriam ... But HAVA not Java Or Chava is the original Eve and in this case the Java is only to explain that you prounounce it like the Spanish J in Juan ,,,,, Thank you will look up the sock machine ,,, do you imply that it looks like a Lazy Jenny ??? mirjam

I don't know if it would work with the spiral ones, but if they were plain, you could find out where you need to put the heel, snip and ravel back half around (1/4 in each direction), pick up stitches and knit an Afterthought Heel, also called a Peasant Heel.

The round looms are being used to make slipper socks for the troops using a double strand of yarn. If you used a single, you could probably change the pattern to make regular socks that fit.

This is where I found the pattern when looking at slipper patterns forme before designing my own. Leah

Hallo back to ya, Mirjam! Ha! Should've remembered that it was Hava and not Java 'cause you explained before that you were trying to help me know how to pronounce it. :) Sometimers (what my friend cleverly calls our memory lapses ... a play on the term Alzeimers which sounds like "all timers) messing with me again. LOL

I couldn't find anything when I searched for Lazy Jenny, but I'd imagine it's another name for the same thing. What our mommies made for us were emptied thread spools with four (or more) small nails put into the top so that the yarn could be wound around the nails with the first round pulled over the second nail by nail ... which I'm sure you know made a knit stitch. The created cord/tube went down through the hole in the spool. The sock machine is the same principle, just larger and makes a larger tube.

Have you got pics or a site about the Present for Eve & Her Daughters exhibition?

Smiles, Eve

Ooooooo! You're a mind reader, Tamar! I was just telling my friend last night that I had to either cut those socks and hunt up the instructions I saw here on how to add an afterthought heel ... or cut the toes open, frog 'em back to prior to the decreases and then knit some more to 'em and turn 'em into leg warmers (or very short ones that would be more like "ankle warmers!) Maybe I'll start a new trend -- bwahahahahaha! I think I'm gonna make warmers (of some sort!!) 'cause I'm not too sure about adding a heal with the spirals.

Thanks for the suggestion! Eve :o)

Or... if you have more of the yarn, you could open the toes, ravel back to just before the decreases, and knit normal sock heels and feet onto them. Then you'd have extra-long socks.

AYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why didn't I think of that, Tamar!?!!! That's BRILLIANT, and it's definitely what I'll do. :o)

Thanks TONS for the great answer! LOL Eve :o)
