One at a time, or several always in progress???

X-No-Archive:yes

Just curious - how do you work? Do you finish each of your projects one at a time, or do you always have several in progress?

I have one or two larger projects and always a pair of socks on the go for portability. That way I don't get bored. ;>)

I'm down to two socks on needles. I also have a sweater on needles, and another in the spinning stage. And I may be joining a KAL shortly for a total of three sweaters working.

Damn, Mothers' Day is coming and I need to make up that horrible bubble-gum pink yarn for Meemaw :P

I usually have one or two embroidery projects going and one or two knitting (or crochet) projects going. At the moment one embroidery project started, one kitted and ready to start, a crocheted preemie set in the works (to be turned in in May), my NYCO sweater 1/4 done, and the pieces of one knitted sweater to be assembled (I'm never doing that again...the thing should go together as you knit!).

ROFL - several, spanning years, and rarely finish anything except smaller stuff. Yeah, I'm a process type. Then add in that it depends on what I feel most like doing: knitting, spinning, making jewelry, writing, weaving, or something *else*. Some I drop for years at a time. (like the weaving. for one thing, I never had a loom until about 10 years ago. then I didn't have any space to set it up, so weaving's still on hiatus. and I haven't embroidered for - geesh, nearly 30 years! it's not like *that* takes a lot of equipment...) But to me the whole point is having fun, so I mostly do what I feel drawn to at the time. Which can change from one day to the next. But I do have fun. I may be nuts, but it's all fun. ;)

Monica - currently planning an Egyptian-style collar necklace to wear to the Tut exhibit in Chicago in June. Um, yeah, this is gonna interfere with the knitting...but I'll be taking some of that along.

LOL, Joan! The last time I had one project going, was probably when I was six (Mom now informs me I was 4 1/2, but I still say 6) and learning HOW to knit and crochet! Noreen currently with:

3 prs socks on needles 2 shawls on needles 1 afghan on knitting maching sliver/roving ready for wheel 1 lace panel on pillow (bobbinlace) and for a change, nothing tatted in the works!

Let's see. I'm pretty much a one at a timer, who plows through a project, but I usually have a couple of other things laying around, like scarves or block afghans, that are for when I'm between projects.

Hi Joan,

Oh, I always have at least three afghans going, Wouldn't know what to do if I only had one in the basket next to my chair.

Joan I mainly do "one at a time' as I like to see what is started finished. The only difference is that 6 x 6 has to interrupt other projects, of course. God Bless Gwen

I'm a slacker... I tend to work on one item at a time, but somehow right now I have one longterm UFO glaring at me from the corner. I won't let myself start two projects at once lest I end up with multiple UFOs. It's bad enough to have so many unstarted objects.

I must agree with Jan here. I would not consider myself a newbie but I prefer to have only one project going at a time. That way, as I tire of it, I push myself to finish so that I can start something new. Carol in TN

Hi Joan, I think you'll find that most crafters especially knitters crocheteers and weavers etc have very active minds, and one project at a time isn't enough, most of us have several things on the go at once, newbies often only have one thing going whilst they learn, but will soon have tons on the go all at once it's part of the craft brain bit...

I have knitting crochet spinning and weaving on the go all the time,

I know what you mean, Cher. Mom started me on knitting at age 4 and I am now a retiree so I've had many years of projects which never resolved and were put aside for something new. Thanks to 'our Nora' who introduced me to Project Linus I am currently involved in just crocheting afghans for the children. I work on only one at a time - doing the same ripple afghan stitching I've always done

- and thinking only about what color yarn I will get for the next one. This is all done while listening to/watching sports events, mostly baseball, and trying to read and do the NY Times crossword. I'm also a free-lance writer and get lots of ideas while I am doing that ripple. Hugs, Joan.

I'm certainly an exception to what Cher describes as I have no need to have many projects going at once. For me, it's better to concentrate on what I'm doing until it's done. Being a newbie has nothing to do with my style as it has been a very long time since I started.

Hi Jan, gosh you are making me envious, I wish I could just not get side tracked onto or into something else. I have tried to just have one thing going and never to start something else, until it's finished, but couldn't, for a start even though I knit evening when i am downstairs watching tv, I also weave when I'm upstairs, and somewhere inbetween I have to fit in other projects like finishing off the weaving at the workshop, or making something in felt or whatever at home for the workshops various fund raisers or shows, and I've found lots of crafters like this, with so much on, if I get bored I just switch.

But it must be nice to be able to do one thing right to the end, then start something else.......I can't...lol I'd be bored..

Well done you..hugz cher

No Cher, don't be envious unless you really feel you are trying to do too much Someone else mentioned getting bored without many WIPs but that just doesn't happen to me as long as I have something to do. Also, I don't spend much time each day on crafts and none at all on some days. Mostly, this just illustrates that people are different.

Cher

I agree that I normally have a few projects on the go at once. Right now I think I have probably 3-4 knitting projects on the go and just as many crocheting projects. I haven't even thought of the other craft like projects in various stages of completion I also have on the go.

I have so many projects in progress that I forget about them regularly. I usually find them when I'm looking for a tote bag, a row counter, or a specific set of needles. When I was cross-stitching, some of my friends worked out some elaborate methods of rotating projects every 10 hours or every so many stitches. I tried it for a while, but I'm not nearly that disciplined. I guess if I were, I could do one project at a time until it was finished, eh???
