Just one gauge mess

Probably, Sue. I just like the idea of a poncho being thick.

I've seen some people wearing some really pretty ponchos in lightweight yarn. They look warm enough for cooler spring and autumn days (and likely a couple of cooler summer evenings), but not quite warm enough for colder wintery days.

Hi Katherine! I must say I agree. And I afraid there are no such yarn in this time zone that I could use to knit that pattern. Argh...Such a pretty pattern...and easy to knit...and still completely impossible. Oh well...I must choose another one. I have spoken with Auntie Nora already...I do not know if my second favourite is better than this. Best: Pirjo

Hi! Well, that garter stitch poncho is out of the question if mounts of stitches are like that. I could not control such mount. No way. So....I had to take another plan.

in my time zone I have couple of yarns I like a lot. One of them is called Novita 7 Brothers (translated name) and its gauge is 18 stitches and 26 rows = 10 cm. The other one is Novita Nalle (Bear as translated) and the gauge issue is 22 stitches and 32 rows = 10 cm All right...Now I ask my question. Which of those yarns is better to knit the Choo Choo thing, if the gauge issue is involved? Or is it the same thing as with the garter stitch poncho? I mean are they both useless even in this Choo Choo thing? Best: Pirjo

Hi Pirjo, I looked at the Choo Choo (funny name) pattern and see it has a gauge of 16 sts = 10 cm. So the first yarn would be the better choice. You still might have to add some stitches and rows to make it large enough. Or you could try a larger needle to get the right gauge.

Well, life is all about compromises, isn't it, Pirjo? Good luck with your poncho.

Hi Katherine! I think you are right. :) I have been there and done that...Oh well. *sigh* Must find another pattern...one which suits as poncho better than that garter stitch one. Best: Pirjo

You could always use two strands of knitting worsted at the same time, that would make it nice and thick. I've done that to make slippers when I don't have the colour I want in bulky yarn.
