looking around in shops

Hi!

Today I noticed some crocheted mittens in a VERY posh sport shop here in Stockhom. The shop, Cross or something like that, has been founded by an extreme sport team (maybe you've seen the serie on Discovery Channel). Well, the mittens were made of two parts in sc, back and front, sewn together, one side red, the other pink. The price, boy, about 25 USdollars! I looked at the yarn composition, if it made them more precious, but no, it was something like you call homespun, 50% acryl, 50% wool. They had also crocheted skull caps, at the price of 16 USdollars each! Hope that the crocheters who made them will get well payed, but I doubt about it...

Well, I went to a yarn shop and bought a ball of yarn for about 5 dollars/ 100 gr and I'll have my mittens!

By the way, today a neighbour of mine in Italy fills 100 years (just one week younger than Greta Garbo). She still crochets! My mother gave her as a present a linen tea towel, so she can crochet around it... Is it crocheting (and knitting) the secret for a long life? :-)

Anna Maria

Yikes! High prices for those items in the store. Good that you found some yarn that you like and can make your own mittens for so much less money. :o)

Aww, isn't that lovely! I think yarnwork *must* have something to do with long life. Let's hope so anyway! ;o) My Dad's oldest sister, who knitted and crocheted, lived to be about two weeks short of her 102nd birthday! :o)

Peace! Gemini

those look *very* easy to make, Anna Maria! You could likely make those without having a pattern at all.... just by looking at the picture. It boggles the mind what some stores ask high prices for. Peace! Gemini

just took another look. Those mittens look crocheted rather than knit, don't they?

Peace! Gemini

Hi Gem!

They ARE crocheted. I was also surprised to find knitted, both in the shop and on the website. On the label in the shop they wrote "knitted mittens" in English. Also in Swedish they wrote stickad (knitted) instad of virkad (crocheted)... maybe some people considers crocheting not enough high-status, who knows...

For me, I will search for something involving no sewing, since I don't like to sew.

There are many people who don't know there is a difference between knitting and crocheting. They are more familiar with the term "knit" because machine-knitted fabrics are much more common than machine-crocheted. So if it's done by hand, they will think it must be hand-knitted even though it is really hand crocheted.

Anna Maria, I went searching and found a few sites that have crocheted mittens... and I don't see where they might need to be sewn either. ;o)

Here you go! Oh... and an added "ear mitten" pattern too, for keeping your ears toasty warm. I'd be afraid they would fall off.

I am sore that it helps a lot, There are more and more of us becoming over a 100 years old. At our textilemeeting today, we had the oldest member come to visit us, she is far in her nineties, she still drives her car, but is not allowed to go on long trips on the hightway, but may drive locally to do her shopping etc. Amazing. Lets go for it, happy weaving, spinning knitting and anyother textile craft, and think happy thoughts.

> Hugs,

Anna Maria, they look indeed easy to make. Sometimes when things are sold in posh stores, people will pay more for them, because they are snobs.....LOL, It is a little like the "Emperor and his New Clothes" story

You are very welcome, Anna Maria! :o) Let us know how the ear mittens work for you, and if you like the finished item when they're actually on your ears.

Yikes - they look like oven mitts! I'm not sure whether I'd want to wear them outside. YMMV

"YMMV" = your mileage may vary. And by the way - I've not been able to figure out "NAYY". Perhaps someone could fill me in on that one.

Shelagh, it is usually used when recommending a retailer. It means "Not Affiliated Yada Yada" and is shorthand for "not affiliated, just a happy customer"

Hi Gem!

I spent the whole morning just making one of them (middle size in socks=20 yarn). The good excuse for that was that I had to be quiet while DH was=20 having a telephone meeting (he=B4s working at home today) LOL

It come out lovely and it feels ok on my ear, but to my surprise it was=20 not so easy as it looked on the paper. I had to try many times before=20 getting it right.

I used Regia socks yarn and colors are sooo lovely. DH says that I look=20 very groovy in it :-D

Forgot to say that my neighbor is the last living sister of the lady who introduced me to crocheting. My dear friend died at 93, not so bad as well...
