My crazy yarn ball

I am doing a something-different project by taking a lot of remnants of yarn (worsted weight or close to it, and all machine washable and machine dryable) and cutting them into approx 1-yard lengths, and once I accumulated 1500-plus yards, I sorted them out into approximate color groups and now I'm making a "crazy-knit" (like crazy quilt) yarn ball out of them with as much of a pattern as I can do, which is turning out to be more or less regular.

I don't know what I want to do with it when I am done. Maybe a jacket, maybe a poncho, maybe a sofa throw, maybe one of those The Big Snuggly things

I might use it by itself or double-strand it with another color or several other colors to create subtle striping under the random color scheme.I have been looking for something I can do just for the sake of doing somethign different creatively, and this is turning out to be tons of fun. I am winding them into 300-350-yard center-pull balls and will have 5 of them when I am done. I am waiting until I am done making all the yarn balls to try a test swatch, because I want to finish them and don't want to do a test swatch and go "EWWWWWW, this is gross!" and lose my impetus to finish the project.

Am I being really weird to do this, or is it going to come out okay?

It's good enough for Kaffe Fassett. I believe he uses that technique.

It might be fun to knit fairly straight strips but use different texture patterns, especially the ones recommended for mixing up variegated yarns when knitting socks. I think there ought to be enough to knit a loose kimono-likejacket by seaming the strips together.

Yes Kaffe does use it. I have seen examples of it when I went on one of his knitting workshops. There is a sample of the piece of knitting I did at the workshop on my web site under other crafts. We were given a picture postcard and told to pick up 20 colours of wool and if that was not enough to pick 20 more. I think I got 38 colours in mine some of them just odd stitches. We were taught how to weave the ends in as we progressed. It was a wonderful weekend. At the moment I am resting, I was rushed in hospital last Thursday night with heart problems. The second time in 4 months. So I do not feel motivated to do anything at the present time. Hugs Shirley

Nope, there was a poncho pattern on an online knit magazine (I think out of Australia) that did this. She sorted all her leftover yarns by color and tied them together in a large ball, left the ends hanging out for effect. Looked good.

I think it will be gorgeous! I have - somewhere - a pattern for a vest done like this. I keep threatening to do it myself, but don't have the time. I'd love to see a picture of whatever you make.
