Question re Crochet Cotton

I'm desperate!!! Not sure if I've come to the right section, could someone please correct me if I'm wrong? I've just purchased a pattern for a crocheted bedspread, and teh materials are "52 balls mercerised cotton". From the hook size (no7 steel), I've worked out that it's number 10 cotton, but am at a loss on the ball size! In Australia, crochet cotton comes in anything from 20g to

100g balls. The pattern is American, and I was wondering if there was a common size ball there? Alternativly, does anyone know a ballpark figure for how much thread a double sized bedspread would use? (ie more likely to be 1kg, 2.5 or 5? or the oz equivalent!) THANK YOU!

I'm sorry, but I don't crochet well enough to help you. However, there are some crocheters here who should be able to answer. Good luck!

I DO crochet, and am in USA, however, I can't help either, because I purposely look for patterns and skeins/hanks/balls etc. that list yardage..... Hope someone else here jumps in and helps you. By the way, welcome to RCTY, I don't think I've seen you here before! Noreen in middle Tennessee, USA, about 69 miles east north east of Nashville.

Hi,

I crochet quite a bit with #10 cotton - and depending on the manufacturer we can get very large balls of crochet cotton. But Southmaid comes in 460 Yd. balls and a tablecloth for a small table (36x60 ins.) takes about 16 balls. assuming that that is a 100g ball, I would guess that 52 balls for a double sized bedspread would be just about right. If you can get the cotton that does not have dye lot #'s then you could probably buy it a little at a time.

I have found, that for me at least, I never start out to make a tablecloth or an afghan - just one motif. That way I am always amazed when I find that I have completed a tablecloth.

I just checked one of my old Coats & Clarks pattern books (from 30+ years ago!), and these patterns all used Knit-Cro-Sheen in 250 or 175 yard balls. I am looking at a beadspread pattern that calls for:

J&P Coats KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, Art A.65, White or Ecru only:

35 400-yard balls for a single size spread (14,400 yds total) OR 44 400-yard balls for a double size (17,600 yards total)

J&P Coats KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, Art A.64: Single size:

55 250-yard balls of white, Ecru or Cream (13,750 yards) OR 77 175-yard balls of any color (13,475 yards) Double size: 71 250-yard balls of white, ecru or cream (17,750 yards) OR 101 175-yard balls of any other color (17,675 yards)

A similar pattern in the book, but one with a slightly more open lacier look, has the same size options, but substituting the number of balls as 28 and 33 (instead of 35 and 44), and 46, 65, 54 and 76 (instead of 55, 77, 71 and 101)

All of these call for the same size hook, #7, and the gauge is the same for both, so I'm not sure what the difference is between the two "Article" specifications, except that maybe A.65 only came in 400 yard balls. And it looks like the cream, white and ecru came in 250 yard balls, and the other colors came in 175 yard balls.

And to further confuse things, I just checked my stash of mercerized crochet cotton, and I have a lot of Baroque by DMC that is in 400 yard balls (skeins, actually), and several balls of Aunt Lydia's "special value" 1000 yard balls.

Unfortunately, none of these mention grams at all. But hopefully it will give you an idea, based on the size you are trying to make, of how many balls to buy.

:Hello, Depending on the pattern, in number 10 cotton a double size spread would take approximately 12,000 to 13,000 yards --- about 5 to 5 1/2 pounds or

2.25 to 2.5 kilos
