Need the Name of these things

I remember great-grandma's and grandma's having rectangular doilies on the backs of their chairs and on the arm rests. I know that there is a name for them ( I called them Chair Doilies), but my mom says they are called " animacastors" (maybe misspelled). If anyone knows the answer, please reply to the group and/or to myself.

Thanks for your time

the name is Antimacassars. Macassar was a kind of hair oil , used by people mostly at end of 19th cent and start of 20th,,, when people leaned on chairs and sofas it Stained them , thus those rectangular crocheted doilies were esier washable and exchangeable than the whoile chair or Sofa,, mirjam

Hint: I inherited some beautiful ones from my grandmother, and as they are about 12" x 18" I put them into use as placemats.

Hi,

My grandmothers used to call them chair back sets. I'm like you Olwyn Mary, I have some lovely sets that my grandmothers did. Mine have either flowers or birds on them.

Hugs,

They're called antimacassars. We generally called them the things on the back of the couch in my grandmother's house.
