August Block of the Month - posting for Danielle - it's early!

I'll be on vacation next week and not close to a computer. So I thought that I'd post the BOM early instead of having everyone wait until the 7th. Thought there might be some itchy to start! grin

Cappy

How this BOM works is I will post block patterns each month near the beginning of each month. One is pieced, one appliqué and one paper pieced. It is up to you which one (or ones) you would like to do. You will work at your own pace over the course of each month. You keep your blocks. You do not mail them to me. At the end of the year you will have twelve blocks to set into a quilt. You keep the quilt. You do not mail it to me (unless you really feel the need to give me this gift!). You will then have your very own 2006-2007 RCTQ BOM quilt. When I announce a month's block patterns, I will also include the previous months' as well so if you decide to join along the way you will have all the blocks. Pieced blocks and paper pieced blocks will be 12" in size whenever possible and appliqué blocks will be whatever I can find that is available. Feel free to size up/down if you so chose.

This BOM will run from April 2006 through May 2007. This is how the schedule breaks down: ===============================================================

April 2006 - March 2007: Monthly blocks

April 2007: Completing the Top (setting, sashing, borders, etc.)

May 2007: Completing the Quilt (quilting, binding, labeling, etc.) - Done!

Marcia Hohn has a pin rating on her site

that rates the level of difficulty of her block patterns. One pin blocks are fairly simple and they increase in difficulty as the number of pins increase. I will start with one pin blocks and increase our difficulty as we go so that we are challenged, but not overwhelmed! I also consider myself a fairly novice quilter, and these will all be blocks I would be willing to try (well, maybe not the appliqué). Most of the blocks with only have three colors to them; however, some of them may have four.

Finished blocks can be seen at

I must give a very largeTHANK YOU! to Teri for maintaining the gallery!

Thanks for reposting all the patterns. :) If I can build up my stash again, I look forward to catching up with you all!

Now I remember what I was going to do yesterday afternoon. I still have one June block to finish. Maybe after work today.

Yippee! I was so hoping this block would be used that I already had downloaded it to use to replace any month's block I didn't like as much. I even have a few new yellow fabrics to use in the petals, and new lime fabrics for the leaves and stem. Now if I just had time to actually sew the block I'd be in heaven. Isn't time always the problem? :-) I worked 18 days in the past 3 weeks so today was spent catching up with housework and a little yardwork. Maybe tomorrow I can work on some blocks or at least fondle fabric.

What size are you doing your applique blocks, and which applique technique(s) are you using? I have been making mine the same size as the pieced blocks so my applique pieces won't be too small, but this one would be really hard if I were making small blocks. Debra in VA See my quilts at

For some reason, it seemed like a good idea to make the applique blocks

6.5". My ultimate plan is to do all 3 blocks every month and use them all in one quilt. So I will put 4 applique blocks together to make 12.5" blocks, which would give me 24+3= 27 blocks. So I will make duplicates of some of them and produce 30 blocks. Set 5 X 6, should be a useful size!

The sunflower is done, thought it best to just jump in and get it over with. Came out OK! Wasn't nearly as bad as I thought! The others will have to wait a bit, I'm machine quilting something and need to get it finished. Roberta in D

I working at Walmart and I've bought 4 yds of fabric for each of the last two pay checks I've gotten. My stash is going up by 8 yds/month and I don't have time to use any of it. This could be the beginning of a very bad habit. I'm just going to have to call myself a fabric collector. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Just think of the fun you'll have when you get vacation time.

I'm printing the paper piece templates for the August blocks now. I may get started on them today.

Wow, you are doing all three of the blocks each month. I can't even get the time to sew the June applique ones. I had two ideas on how to use lime fabric on the ladybug block so I cut out pieces for both ideas. The pieces are all cut and ready, I just don't have the sewing time right now due to my new job. It'll get done eventually though. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Anything and everything. :) I had a lovely stash a few years ago and when I moved from house to much smaller apartment, and from job to being unemployed, I sold most of it. (My bad.)

I love scrappy quilts/projects in any color. I'd be happy to send a check or Paypal "donation" for anything you might part with. :)

Thanks very much for asking.

My first thought was that Walmart clearly doesn't pay enough if all she can buy is 4 yards of fabric! Roberta in D

Well, I'm trying to use some restraint. I'm a little afraid of what would happen if I bought all the fabo fabric I could.

This job might not last anyway. I've been out of work due to sickness three times already. Right now I can't work because I'm too dizzy to walk across the floor and I'm feverish and nauseated too. I've lost 4 pounds in the last three days because I can't eat. Debra in VA See my quilts at
