OT: ATTN: Wooly/Thyroid

Hi Wooly,

I hope you don't mind me asking, but you said your doc took you off the beta blockers, and I have a question for you. Did you stop the meds abruptly, or did your doc step you down? I was told by a substitute nurse over the the doc said to stop taking it as I am now starting Synthroid. Could you feel a difference when you stopped the beta blockers?

I hope your thyroid problems are ironing themselves out. I have been feeling yuck for about a week, and can't wait to get this Synthroid in my bloodstream. How long after you started the thryroid replacement before you started feeling better?

Hope you're well,

Hesira

PS: If anyone else has experience with this, please feel free to chime in.

What I meant to say was over the phone. What I'm implying is she doesn't know my case.

Well, I was on a pretty high dose of beta blocker to deal with the palpitations and elevated BP brought on by the thyroid storm I experienced while my thyroid was gasping it's last. My doc had already given me permission to start decreasing my dose based on resting heart rate. At one point my resting heart rate was 55bpm and I couldn't haul my sorry ass off the couch, so I dropped my dose by

25mg per week over the course of a month. By the time I saw her last week I was down to 25mg/day and she told me to quit the bet blocker altogether. My historical BP is usually on the low side (typically about 90/60), when I had it checked at the doc's office last week it was 82/54 and they were a bit worried :D I had already taken a tab for Friday (the day I saw my doc) but I haven't taken any since.

As to whether I feel a difference since I stopped taking the Toprol: I'm not dizzing when I stand up. I assume I *was* dizzy on standing due to a drop in my already low BP. I'll drop by the office on Monday for a BP check but I expect I'm back to "normal" now.

I started feeling better after about 3 days of Synthroid @ 100mcg. My fine motor coordination is coming back, ditto balance. I had a hot flash yesterday for the first time since July *lol* So my temp control is coming back online as well, though it is still quite unreliable and probably always will be :P The stupidity seems to be on the run as well - I was able to math a sweater without a calculator yesterday and the numbers actually checked when I ran them backwards.

So apparently the "very slow" seems to be inaccurate at least in my case. I started feeling better almost immediately. I had blood drawn yesterday (2 weeks @ 100mcg Synthroid), today the doc called and told me to bump it up to 125mcg. In a month I'll have more bloodwork and see if I need another adjustment. Since I have to eat a little something in the morning (using insulin sucks, the alternative sucks more) I'll probably need a higher maintenance dose due to reduced uptake, but that's OK. I'm still lobbying for a slight hyperthyroid state

Synthroid apparently takes about 2 weeks to reach 75% uptake saturation, somewhat longer to reach whatever your personal maximum uptake happens to be. Over on the thyroid support board the majority opinion is to wait at least a month between dose changes. My doc is comfortable with upping me after 2 weeks so I'm good with it, but I also noted above that it'll be a month from now before I have another adjustment.

I'm hella better than I was two weeks ago, trust me!

It'll get better, give it some time :D

It takes about a month to get back to feeling normal......my gland was dead for almost a year before I went to the Dr. I didn't realize how bad I felt until I felt better but I was a extreme case so you may feel better in a few weeks.....hope you feel better soon! Donna

I've been on dessicated thyroid and synthroid since late 1970 and still have to fight every time I have to go to a new doctor to keep from going on synthroid. It gave me heart palpitations like nobody's business.

The last doc I had here in West Point suggested that perhaps I should stop taking the dessicated thyroid (after some numb nutz in the hospital upped it from 120 mg to 180 mg w/o an explanation.) I didn't fill it until I had seen the doctor I had to go to when my car was so unrealiable, I was afraid it would strand me halfway between here and Midlothian. She said fill it and take it. I don't know why he upped it. And it has been many years since you had the palpitations, so do it. I did, the palpitations came back and I had to cut the pills in half to stop it. When I told her this, she said - well, maybe you should stop taking it altogether. Needless to say, she has been fired and I have realiable transportation, so I am back to traveling to Midlothian every 3 months. Frances

Thanks, Everyone.

I'm taking Atenolol (Tenormin) 50 mg (beta blocker), twice daily. I'm worried about stopping it abruptly, because everything I've read says not to. I wasn't thinking about this when I talked to the nurse, and when it did occur to me, it was too late. I think I'll keep taking it over the weekend, and call the doc on Monday. In the mean time, I'll start Synthroid 75 mcg.

So far, my hypo hasn't been as bad as my hyper. That was sheer hell. The nurse said on the phone, that my thyroid had *failed*. I'm not sure exactly what that means, but, I haven't had weight gain yet, or too much else, really. Just exhaustion in the afternoons, sensitivity to cold, and a lack of intellectual focus that goes with the afternoon tiredness. I can't wait to start my meds! I want some energy back.

Thanks again for sharing.

Jeeeze - you are saying I may have a real reason for a lack of intellectual focus (laugh)???? Wow, I have an excuse. ;>), except that my dosage of

100mcg of Synthroid has been stable for a long time.

Eh, but it can change! Once my dose is "dialled in" I'm going to ask my doc for a pile of smallest-increment samples so that I can tweak myself up as I see fit. She ought to be good with that - she's the one who treats my symptoms but runs the labs to keep my insurance company happy :D
