OT: (Sort of) Silly Putty

in my wool rug. Silly Putty site says WD 40 & rubbing alcohol. I've also read: peanut butter, Goo Be Gone, Goof Off, Ice, Dry Cleaning Fluid, etc.

My question is, does anyone know how wool would react to the above chemicals. I'm not too worried about WD 40, PB, or Ice, but the others? Has anyone else had to deal with this? Did you get rid of the awful stuff?

TIA

I'd lean towards the rubbing alcohol, as it evaporates. I recently stepped in gum and didn't for several hours while on a road trip. By then, I had moved my feet a few times on the carpet, and had 4 spots of ground in gum. That alcohol you keep in your purse (the gelled kind) did the trick perfectly. Soak, and pick out with a paper napkin.

I'd worry the WD40 or BP would leave an oily stain you couldn't get out (ditto the Goof off and Goo Be gone).

None of these will damage the wool, but they may affect the dyes or leave a stain.

I use WD-40 for cleaning my steel needles. It is mostly an organic solvent and cleans off the wool when I wash the wool with cheap shampoo. The rubbing alcohol may lift more of any polar (water soluble) dyes.

I would spot test on an inconspicuous spot for dye fastness and effectiveness.

I shouldn't laugh, but I will. LOLOLOL Now to get serious. I would use ice. It won't harm anything, and won't leave its own stains, as the PB would. Just freeze it, and pick it out. It will take time, but you should save the rug.

Good luck!
