you can't always tell gender from the U/S. sometimes baby is facing the wrong way :) i had an amnio with my U/S and the little monster grabbed the needle! i do wish they had given me a picture of that... but gender was not available from the U/S & i specificly asked not to know from the amnio. i like surprises :) lee

\ Hi, Lee! Yep, we know baby can turn away, and hide his or her sex. . . but Kelley is confident we'll find out. As for knowing.... the ONLY reason Kelley wants us all to KNOW is because of the vast seperation, whatwith them being in Okinawa and both families here in the USA, she feels that it will make things easier if we all 'know'. Me, I only care that it's healthy. Noreen

Easier for starting early on little knitted things -- but you are right, both kinds of grandkids are a joy. I only have granddaughters but have gotten to enjoy my sister's grandsons. I trust Kelley understands the need for frequent pictures when the time comes - with e-mail we can get them quickly and share them easily (better than the old grandma brag books) People wonder if I have lots of grandkids - but I only have lots of pictures around the house of the three girls. i found lots of gender neutral colors, & some especially nice gender neutral varigateds. one that Boo really liked was a Plymouth Encore Colorspun (75% Acrylic 25% wool) in green & grey varigated... it's a 3 ply worsted weight, with one ply solid grey & 2 plys varigated, only not the same. it's really fascinating how it makes the varigations. he's outgrown it long ago but won't let me pass it on. i'm using the same yarn in a white/multi to make a sweater for my niece's new baby (it's light enough on the pink to be suitable for boy's too). of course, i'm not at all fond of pastels for babies either :)

i knit these really cute tiny baby booties (about 3/4") for the grandparents... i used Koigu KPPPM in sort of Autumn colors. i also knit a pair of ladybug socks from Baby Ull, in the largest size in the pattern & they were *way* too small for him at birth...by at least an inch. they're really cute & bright though. unfortunately, now that he's 5, he wants to choose his own patterns... he wants the Kysmik sweater from Elsebeth Lavold's Viking Patterns. in grey. with his name in runes too. lee

Where can I find names in runes?

WB, BTW, I haven't seen you here for a while.

if you have (or can borrow from the library) Elsebeth Lavold's Viking Patterns for Knitting, she has the Futhark (runic alphabet) with it's phonetic values. you just need to break the name into it's phonetic components & then use the corresponding rune. she has charts for all the runes too.

oh, i read almost every day, but i haven't had much to say. Boo started attending his preschool full time on Nov. 1st, in a new, smaller class with a different teacher. his progress in

2 weeks has been greater than in the past year. he can suddenly write & draw a representational picture. over the summer he picked up reading & adding/subtracting. he's doing well at that, but of course still prefers being read to (he has been choosing chapter books since last spring & is currently on Huckleberry Finn). since he's not home, i am tearing off wallpaper & getting the house much messier in preparation for fixing things up & painting :) since the house is a disaster anyway, i invited the entire preschool & kindergarten class, parents & siblings to a Halloween party. a 190 year old house with peeling paper seemed appropriate for that. it was fun! lee

One day I was in a store called "The Rainforest" and happened to see these necklaces with markings on them. I had never heard of Runes before, but they intrigued me and I found myself going back to them about four times while in the store... and to the same two necklaces. Finally, I just bought them, and gave one to Matthew, keeping the one with the X on it for myself.

About a month later I was in a bookstore and happened to see a book about Runestones. I bought it! When I was going through it, there was a part that showed how to work out what your life Rune was... so I tried it. Lo and behold, my life Rune is X, which is gyfu (spelled differently in some of the websites I have come across, and also known as "gebo"). The meaning of gyfu in my book is "Gifted one".

Also, when I worked Matthew's out, his was exactly the one that I had chosen for him the month before when I hadn't even heard of Runes before.

In any case... here are some URLs for Runes, with a lot of information on them.

LOL I think that your idea of fun and MY idea of fun are not the same. Good for Boo. I guess he is enjoying Huck? How about Tom Sawyer? In many ways, that was a better book, I thought.

well... his birthday is in August & i invite most of the previous year's class to that and have never had more than 6 kids show up. so, i figure i'll get about the same for a halloween party, maybe a few more with siblings... boy, was i

*wrong*! fifteen kids with an average of one sibling & one parent each. i'm not exactly social, so that was a shock ;) it was fun though. i really like the 3-6 year olds, & most of the siblings were 6-9, with 2 2 year olds.

i think he liked Tom Sawyer better, but his favorite so far has been Treasure Island. i'm debating starting him on the Narnia books next, or maybe the Redwall series (but i need to reread those to check the violence/scary level first). i don't think he's up for Pride and Prejudice yet ;) he likes reading the Dick and Jane books to me. lee

I'd do Narnia before Redwall, I think.
