pictures of knitting sheaths

Too bad we do not know more about the needles they were used with. The sheath, needles, and attachment belt (or apron strings) form a system.

The concept that different sheaths were used with different kinds of needles for different kinds knitting was very hard for me to grasp. For example, one sheath might be used with very long, fine needles for knitting ganseys, while another sheath would be used with short fine needles for knitting socks, and a third sheath might be used with intermediate length, but thicker needles for hats and children's jumpers. Each kind of needle/ sheath system requires a different technique and method of use.

Moreover, some needles would have been curved when they were made, and others would have become curved as they were used.

Someday I am going to touch and feel these knitting sheaths and try to estimate their use from wear marks.

Thanks,

Aaron
