I want to knit a sweater for my nephews. I have one that is 13 and wears a size 12/14 and one that is 8 and wears a 7 or 8 and I have another nephew who is also 8 so I am assuming that he wears a 7 or 8 also since the last time I say both of them together they looked about the same size. I would like to make the sweater so they can wear it for a bit since they are still growing. I don't have kids so these sizes mean nothing to me. I have a cable stitch pattern that goes to size 10 with a finished chest of 32" the guage is 20 sts and 24 rows to 4 in. How would I adjust that to fit the 13 year old and would the size 10 big way to big for the other two. Is it tacky to make the same sweater for all three--they all don't live in the same family (well 2 do but one is my sister's stepson and lives with his mother). Thanks for any pattern ideas or help with the pattern mentioned above. Kristine in Germany

Unless they tend to be chubby, most kids don't change waist size nearly as much as they change height. One way to make the sweaters so they can wear them longer is to knit the ribbing at the waist and wrists from the top down, so that you could knit more ribbing on later if they need to be made longer.
You might try using a bigger needle and slightly heavier yarn, but check the gauge - you don't want to make it too much bigger. If you go to a clothing store with a tape measure and find garments in the sizes you were given, you could measure them. It might be that the chest size would be right but the body and sleeves would have to be longer.
Probably not. If it is too big, they can grow into the sweaters.
No. Just make the colors different.
