Maybe it's a British dc, which is an American sc. One chain would be sufficient in that case. I use 2 dc, not 3, for an American dc, but it depends on how the person works.

Usually when a stitch pattern repeats they put the repeat in parentheses. I would have expected, "(1ch,1dc) in each dc " if these two stitches were to be worked in every stitch of the row below. Also, I would have expected that you wouldn't work it into every stitch of the row below, but into every second stitch.

However, maybe you're right. The result would not only be lacey, it would be rippled and much wider on the second row, because you're doubling the number of stitches. I don't think I've ever seen anything increase so much already on the second row of the work. I hope zenawarrior will tell us what it's supposed to be in the end, because that will help. Also, whether the pattern is British or American.
