specialty yarns

Can someone that has crocheted with a specialty yarn give me some tips? I am experienced at crochet, but find this yarn impossible!!! - I bought some 'feathery' or 'fun fur' type yarn and cannot keep track of the stitches I have made - they just disappear in the 'feathers'. I am using a simple pattern. Thanks!!!!

That's normal for the novelty yarns. Using a large hook will help. Work in good light. You might try stranding it with a smooth yarn to help you see the sts better.

No matter the size of the hook, it is next to impossible to see your stitches. I bought some and decided to make scarves from mine. Double crochet stitches and I just crochet "between" the stitches. I had to keep a count to make sure I was dc'ing the same amount across every row. I will NEVER buy that yarn again!

I saw a crochet st pattern someone suggested for Homespun when there was a similar problem not being able to find the sts. It was something like, sc, ch1, sc, ch1 across, then the next row do the sc in the ch1 space. Or probably dc would work better, not so dense, but doing the sts in the chain space made it easier to see and get the hook into. Oh, I found it

Not only are the specialty yarns had to work with in knitting or crocheting they usually have to be hand washed and laid flat to dry. I am not so sure the younger people would take the time to do it.

Fun fur can be fun. I enjoy some of the projects I've crocheted in the past and knitted.

Try experimenting mixing it with regular yarn, you will be surprised.

The best advice I saw is to use larger needles and hooks. I found it is next to impossible to keep a tight tension on it without GOING INSANE.

Don't give up on it. You can find some good deals on them.

------------------------------------- I had this same problem. Pair it up with a regular yarn of the same color, like a worsted weight yarn. It's much easier to see the stitches then!
