The Neverending Shawl Story

I've been working on my first laceweight project (a shawl) for several months. My goal was to finish it and wear to dinner in a few days. I was down to the last 10 rows (of 525 stitches) which were all just knit rows. Smooth sailing from here, right?

I was happily knitting along and the bamboo (size 3 US) needle broke!! I caught most of the stitches, but there will be some mess ups to find and try to fix. That's after I find a place to buy a replacement needle. I had ordered this one online.

Thank goodness this happened after my swim lesson and I had physically worked out all of the previous tension of the day. I was able to laugh instead of cry :P

OMgosh, BB, this is awful! I was so looking forward to hearing your FINISHING story! The fact that you could laugh... I admire the living hell out of that... I'd be ranting so loud you'd hear me! Noreen

As I said, I could laugh because it was after swimming. Before swimming and I would have yelled and cried. Swimming is therapeutic for me in more ways than one :)

Also, in my mind, this shawl had already become my practice shawl so it was less frustrating than it could have been. What WAS frustrating is that I was using bamboo needles because I hate it when yarn slips off of the slippery ones.

My sympathies. Last night I was on the second to last pattern repeat section of my shawl and somehow lost concentration. Going backward on the pattern is difficult and I had to go back to a section where there were several long rows of garter stitch to be sure it would be right. UGH. I was so looking forward to getting to the edging stage. Fortunately, I did manage to get it back on track but now it will be a couple more days before I finish the main part and can get on to the edging. Your problem sounds much more frustrating - glad you were able to keep your cool. Judy

And you have my sympathies, Judy. I went through something similar to that earlier in the shawl. I learned I must not be beyond a certain level of being sleep deprived to work on lace stitches. I have to save it for when my brain is willing to concentrate for more than 10 seconds at a time :)
