You'd probably want cobweb-weight yarn, or even threadweight, for dress socks. As for needle size: start swatching.

The sort of socks I knit are made with fingering or sock weight yarn, which is usuallly put up in either 50g/200-210m hanks, or 100g/425m hanks. Opal, Regia 4-faegid, and TrekkingXL are some of the more common brands.

Elann.com has several sorts of sock yarn right now including the one behind the link that Sheillagh posted yesterday Elann's house brand sock yarn is decent stuff and reasonably priced. I use it to make cranked socks for resale because it gives me a better profit margin than the Big Name brands do.

Dress socks - which I think of as men's business hose - are usually made out of nylon, or nylon-wool, that is almost as fine as thread, on high-speed circular knitters. I wouldn't want to attempt knitting those by hand...

Wooly I have knitted some socks with coats and clark yarn I was thinking on making some with smaller yarns to see what the outcome would be .Is it better to make them on circular needles or double pointed? See I am always full of questions>LOL.Something new for me to try. Thank you for your help.

Don't forget to swatch! As for whether you should use circs or DPNs, you'll have to decide for yourself. Some people swear by one, some by the other. I prefer DPNs, though I'm not averse to using two circs

Ha! Thanks for this thread and all the questions and answers. I've been wondering all the same things, Stella, but was reluctant to ask. Thanks, Wooly, for all the great info! Eve :o)
