Designer 1 Question.....

Before I purchase my machine (and I have basically decided to go for the D1) I have a question about the floppy drive technology.

I know that on many computers these days they don't even have an A drive anymore. Is this something that should concern me if I get a D1. How will I transfer designs and customizations and updates onto my machine. Is Husquvarna thinking ahead to redesigning the machine to include a CD drive on the machines? Or fhor those that have the floppy drive models an attachment that would be able to read a CD? Just a thought. I'm nervous about sinking all that money into a machine that will be obsolete in 2 years or so.

Any offerings will be gratefully accepted. So many questions, so little time. (the big sale is next weekend)

I recently bought my DH a new Dell computer, and had them add a floppy drive. It cost $20. I'm sure that will be possible in the future. I know people who have added the old 5" drives because they have older records on them. As long as there is space in the tower, you can add drives.

You WILL need the Husqvarna software, "Disk Manager". The floppy has to have some specific files that only the Husq. software (and one other program, I'm told) can create.

If it doesn't have one, you can always add a floppy drive to your computer - internally for $20 or less, externally (connects to a usb port) for US$30-40.

Not likely. If they did, it would be after CD's were obsolete. I'd guess that the trend will be to go back to flash-memory type cards, but common formats like Compact Flash or SD rather than the proprietary formats that many sewing machines still use.

Never happen.

is peanuts compared to the price of the sewing machine and software.

I think floppy drives will be around a long time........there are thousands of them out there on fairly new computers...... Also, can you buy a floppy recorder as a plug and play??? Seems to me one of my friends did that.......

There are also USB drives that you can plug into a USB port on your computer.

You should not have a problem in the near future. My expertise is in computing and I just built a new computer that does not have a floppy drive, it just has memory card readers. But, I picked up a USB floppy drive that works fine with the Viking software to write the discs, since I already own a Designer I machine. So, you could pick up a USB drive and use it on any machine for the forseeable future. Hope this helps.
