So confused on what to do after purchasing machine to get designs from photoshop to embroidery machine.

After reading so many posts I am so confused.......

Goal: To take an image in Photoshop and to embroider it....

I have purchased the Brother 270d and would like to know what else I need.

Thanks, Paula

Well Paula, I don't know that machine, but as far as I know, you cant just transfer pictures in photoshop and turn them into embroidery designs that work in machines. You have to digitize them yourself or have someone do it for you. Digitizing is not just pressing a button and converting to a design. Its like doing graphics designing with the added task of adding thread information so your machine knows what to do with it. I know it's probably a deception for you. When I started working with the Embroidery machine where I work I thought the digitizing software was going to convert any pictures to embroidery designs with the push of a button... this is sadly not the case. So you also need machine embroidery design software to complete the task. After a few days of training and almost 2 years of self- learning the software I've managed to make a digitizer out of myself.

Just look around on the internet, many people/companies offer digitizing service, as do I.

Let me know if you need anything. Email me or check my website.

Hope this has helped you out.

Pictures have a format that describes the colour and density of every dot. Embroidery files have a format that describes every colour, density and motion/position of the needle. The conversion process is a talent and the phot contains no sewing information.

I doubt Photoshop will assist you in this endevour. you need digitization software. You need to load in the photo picure and redraw the image in stitches over top.

======================== Hi Paula, It sounds like you have just recently gotten your machine. I did some research to get an idea of how your system works. The designs are in .pes format, and some designs are built in.

To transfer new designs it looks like you need a gadget for downloading embroidery designs (it appears to use a special card). Not sure if this adapter (Brother PED-Basic) comes with the machine or if you have to purchase it in addition (kind of spendy $124).

create your own designs, you will need digitizing software. I found this Ebay auction that appears to have the software and adapter:

you have the equipment you need, you will save your Photoshop image as a .bmp, .jpg, .pcx, .wmf to import into the PE Design software.

That gives you kind of an overview of the process.

A Caution the software offered on Ebay has a connector to the computer that is on a serial cable. This connector is required to make the software run. Today most computers are made without a serial port connection, so this might be useless to you. Jon

I use embird, cost about 129 for basic, then the digitizer 150, and font engine 145, then the individual fonts at 15 each. there are a couple of other "add-ins" but everything beyond the basic program is optional--it works for 129. Since the 270D works only with a card, you will need a writer box, they cost about 125-175 on ebay.

If you bought the 270D to see if you like doing machine embroidery, OK, but it will only last 1-2 years depending on usage. Then it will require so much work that it will not be cost effective to fix it. If you know you like to do machine embroidery, buy a better machine (I now have a Janome 9700, that I bought at a local shop, but through their online outlet for 1600) and skip the writer box. My writer box is now pretty useless, since I can write directly to my compact flash card.

I have been where you are, deja vue all over again, and wish someone had told me these things before I wasted 700 on stuff of questionable quality or to run the stuff of questionable quality.

I appreciate your comments, Jon. With such a variety of embroidery machines out there, it's difficult to keep up with all the additional items needed, etc.

you're quite welcome, I spend 2300 on a 1600 item--because no one told me. Imagine what I could have had for that money, if I hadn't been foolish. I wish someone had spoken up!
